    Before the election:

    Labour 21
    SNP 17
    Conservative 11
    Scottish Greens 5
    Liberal Democrat 2
    Independent 2

Of course, the two "independents" were former SNP/Lib Dem, so effectively SNP are at standstill since 5 years ago. However, there are more councillors overall so they have actually done worse than before.

The real story is the collapse of the Labour vote, and it has been divided between Tories, Lib Dems, and Greens. Interesting left/right, Indy/Union, Brexit/EU split there!

I *hope* some voters were thinking about local issues (I know I was) but I fear many were thinking more about national politics when they went to the polls.

"However the if tories managed to get two parties to join them"

I presume protocol dictates that SNP get first crack of the whip at forming an administration. Before that, though I think Alasdair Rankin needs to implement his coup against Frank Ross...

I can't see the Greens or Labour going into coalition with the Tories. The Lib Dems might - but not if they remember some very recent history.

Labour and SNP managed to hold it together last time, so that seems a possibility. Greens or Lib Dems needed for a majority - would be good to see the Greens really get stuck in this time. I know compromise can be ugly, but they could be a real influence on the council - which might be needed given we have lost some pro-green policy senior Labour councillors (Andrew Burns and Lesley Hinds).

Fortunately I haven't been stuck in a windowless box all day (Meadowbank), but I need some cycling.

Will do posts for 'missing' wards later.

Would have been good if they had done it last time - they were asked.

(Assuming you mean join a coalition.)

chdot - yes, then they could argue for a convenorship (Transport and Environment would be good).

"Would have been good if they had done it last time - they were asked."

We've already discussed this: Green votes were not required for a majority so Green group decided against joining coalition last time, as Labour/SNP could do it alone without them.

This time around, could be different. Not for me to say.

At least the Tories are not the largest party. Thank goodness for that.

Right, I'm off down the allotment.

Female representation on council has jumped from 26% to 38%.

47% of new councillors (including those changing wards, such as Nick Cook) are female.

Whilst that's technically true (Labour asked everyone, didn' they?), my understanding is that it quickly became apparent that the SNP were game for a coalition, and negotiations with other parties were redundant.

"yes, then they could argue for a convenorship"

They would have had at least one last time but it didn't suit.

"and negotiations with other parties were redundant"

That's not my understanding of it, though I accept a 3 party coalition might have been hard work.

    This time SNP/Green/LibDem??

    (Well the numbers are there.)

    It would be different!

It seems I shouldn't have mentioned Green target seats publicly. Would a friendly admin mind editing those mentions out?

    @Edinburgh_CC:

There was a 50.5% turnout in Edinburgh for #LocalElections2017 - up from 42.6% in 2012 - with a turnout of up to 60% in some areas

I thought the Greens had preselected candidates for the target seats and said as much?

Depends what you mean by "preselected". Selection process for 11 wards was carried out before selection process for the other 6: http://www.edinburghgreens.org.uk/site/news/council-campaign-feb-17/

@Stickman very good point although the City Centre Twitter account, which I was Tweeting on today, was suggested to remove a target mention but if others have been talking about targets as well, like SRD says, then it doesn't really matter and in any case I think it would all be fairly clear from our first preference voting share ;)

Look at the Craigentinny result (ward 14). It looks like the decision of the SNP to field 3 candidates has backfired (I think it was 3 because of the attempt to deselect Alex Lunn as a candidate failed).

The spread of the surplus from their 1st candidate resulted in 60 votes not going to their 2nd or 3rd Candidate.

The spread of votes from the elimination of their 3rd Candidate resulted in only 526 of her 731 votes going to Lunn.

Lunn lost to the greens by 110 votes.

Some fine margins in some seats.

Does he want to take on the vacant job of Transport Convener?

Seems unlikely - presume he is due to become new Council Leader!

There's some entertaining stuff here (in a good way) -

    "

I’m incredibly grateful to be a Councillor, but it’s fair to say I got elected by mistake. What started as a blunder has ended up being a fantastic two years representing Leith and led to an exciting new challenge in being part of improving Edinburgh’s transport networks and environment.

    All change -

    "

But the group voted 10-8 to put Cllr McVey in charge.

Meanwhile, Tory leader Cameron Rose was voted out of office by his group, despite the party’s success in winning an extra seven seats to make them the second biggest party and just one behind the SNP. Long-serving Tory councillor Iain Whyte, who has served a previous stint as leader, will now take the helm of the new enlarged Conservative group.

And Labour - whose previous leader Andrew Burns stood down at the elections - have chosen former education convener Cammy Day to take over. Labour lost nine seats and slumped to third place in the elections. The choice for leader had been between Cllr Day and former planning convener Ian Perry.
