"OTOH there are written instructions on the ballot paper."
OK
Obviously I wasn't looking, but don't remember anything.
Perhaps 'Numbers not Xs' in big letters on the top and 'more info on back'
(?)
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

I was given full and clear instructions on the format too. Given it was 8pm and he'd have been reading them all day, that guy is a total pro.
Many people don't read instructions. To really drive down the number of spoilt ballots, there needs to be a way of the voter actually demonstrating to the clerk how they will complete it, obviously without revealing their intended vote.
That would take planning, and training of staff, and maybe isn't considered cost-effective.
"maybe isn't considered cost-effective"
Yeah, expensive this democracy stuff.
Day 5 in Office: Turned down a "free" bus pass, cycling is better for my heart. #edward8

There were sheets up on the walls at the count showing examples of accepted and rejected ballots and how the votes would be interpreted for the former. It strikes me that it might have been useful for these to have been on display at polling stations...

#GeneralElection2017 rule of thumb. If a "rumour" about me starts with "An SNP source said". I suggest you ignore it. More rubbish.
"
I feel embarrassed for apparently intelligent adults who parrot the lines like this: "coalition if chaos" - seriously?
the Conservative, Labour and Liberal groups have more in common than divides them and a stable coalition of all three would be bound to the political centre
What will be the end result of three parties (Lab, SNP, Green) locked into a contest to see who can out-left each other?
Tories never worshiped at the altar of intellect right enough, but you need at least a 40W bulb to write in the papers.
"
And where a clear public call for some sense to be brought to the 20mph speed limit policy would in all probability be ignored.
"
Must have missed that.
Just recall various politicians (mostly Conservative) saying 'let's see how existing ones go before doing any more' and being being unwilling to say (especially in their areas) which roads they would move from 20-30 and/or not be reduced 30-20.
Also some saying 'scrapped in Manchester' (FakeNews).
Just re-read what JMowat said.
"where a clear public call for some sense"
So, unpicking that -
"some sense" - who could disagree with that?
"a clear public call" - ah, so that's if there ever was one, some time in the future(?)
Or 'Conservatives call for more 20mph, sooner and better enforced because they are popular with cyclists, pedestrians, people with mobility difficulties and those living/working on/near busy roads or rat-runs'.
If 20mph is going to be part of coalition talks then the Conservatives should publish the evidence they have against the roll-out.
Similarly, they can show the evidence which shows that Sunday parking charges will hurt business.
Otherwise how can negotiations take place?
"
undertake a review of the blanket policy

Important new blog post

I'm not clear if this is referring to (slight possibility of) a coalition involving Con and Green
"
Secondly, that Green councillors stood on a manifesto outlining transformative change for the capital: in housing, transport, social care, community ownership and planning, to take just some examples. Whether or not you agree with all our ideas, it is crucial that this longer term vision is heard within the city chambers in order to set ambitious horizons. That does not always sit comfortably with a role within formal coalition. To do so would also mean that it would be left to the Tories to set an agenda from an increasingly right-wing perspective. Edinburgh needs a radical, green and progressive voice to balance that and to help push policy further than it might otherwise go.
I assume it means coalition with Lab SNP and Con left out.
If so, can't understand why Con left setting agenda.
What am I misunderstanding?
(From yesterday)
"
LABOUR’S Scottish executive committee has put the brakes on a proposed coalition deal with the SNP to run the Capital.
The Labour and Nationalist groups on the city council finally reached agreement to go ahead with a coalition yesterday, after five days of negotiations.
"
LABOUR’S Scottish executive committee has put the brakes on a proposed coalition deal with the SNP to run the Capital.
National politics interfering in local politics again, if the parties can't separate the two what chance the electorate?
"what chance the electorate?"
Not just in the way you meant!
"
THE Capital’s SNP leaders today insisted they are ready to lead the city – with or without Labour.
"
Perhaps time for SNP/Green coalition!

SNP & Labour have agreed to form a coalition to run South Ayrshire after the previous Lab/Con coalition could not be established. The Conservatives are the largest party, but no chance of running a minority administration.
More scuttlebut on the Portobello councillor who lost his seat.

Is the Iain McGill mentioned in that article (the person who filed the complaint) the same Iain McGill who is standing as the Conservative candidate in North & Leith?
Councillor McGill happens to describe himself as a "businessman" on his Twitter bio, as does the article. A little digging around Companies House suggests he runs an employment agency for home helps.
Oh look! He's on Twotter: https://twitter.com/iainmcgill?lang=en
(Not an endorsement).
"
“Any agreement would necessarily have to bring together three parties to govern from the centre to provide a stable administration which could deliver improved services for the people of Edinburgh.”
"
"
LABOUR has rejected an approach from the Conservatives for a three-way coalition to run Edinburgh.
Labour group leader Cammy Day said his party could not do a deal with the Tories because they refused to commit to a tourist tax and would not rule out privatisation of services.
"
Maybe this could become a new soap opera?
Or maybe there's not enough action?
That's good news the Tories are out of the running. I imagine there may be some fine tuning of an SNP-Labour agreement, and that there will be an arrangement with Greens on certain priorities.

One source said: “They have not accepted the proposal and asked the group to look at it again.”
The move looks likely to mean a further delay in resolving the question – which has been hanging over the city since the council elections on May 4 – of who will form the administration to run the Capital for the next five years.
"
So are councillors twiddling their thumbs, while things just carry on without any political input/interference?!
