Prof curt ice reported as saying recent by-election results have been uniformly appalling. Except the last two dos he mean? Where they won after Britain's last communist retired in The Lochs in fife and err in Irvine where they very narrowly beat Nicola sturgeon's mum?

Not likely to be anything but a whitewash next May and all other by elections apart from the last two have been appalling,

"All but one of Scotland’s cities is predicted to be SNP-run after next May.

The party already runs Dundee and Perth, but would also take over in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling, only missing out on Inverness as it is part of the wider Highland authority."

    Oh God. No...

But he added: “As we enter next year’s local government elections, I do believe Edinburgh Conservatives need to be visionary and forward looking. At a time of immense pressures on local government, we need experienced, collegiate and constructive leadership. Sometimes I have failed to see that.

The overall message coming across is that being a councillor is a pretty thankless task, and many don't fancy doing it just to implement cuts.

    Yes.

It will be interesting to see how SNP candidates front that one.

(And other SNP SG plans to reduce responsibilities/scope of LAs - notably with education.)

Maybe some populist stuff about ripping up cycle tracks and spending money on fixing potholes instead?

    Apparently -

    "

Under the plans, some of Scotland’s 32 local authorities may cease to exist as they merge with neighbouring councils, while others will be expected to either devolve powers to a hyper-local level or hand them back to central government.

If the reforms go ahead, bin collections could in the future be handled by individual towns and responsibility for road maintenance could be taken away from councils and instead handed to Transport Scotland.

You can tell the government how great you think this proposal is by completing the consultation. Online It only takes an hour

    @gembo, I don't suppose you have a link?

I shall reserve full judgement until I have more detail on the proposals. However so far this appears to be an outrageous power grab by the Scottish government. We need more local control over local decisions, not less.

Strange article, people all irate about something that's 'under wraps'.

Is subsidiarity still allowed? The idea that every decision should be taken at the most local level possible?

@ crowriver, I do have a link but I am in Malta reunited with my under crackers.

    Google

    excellence equity consultation Scottish education

you have until the end of December and actually can probably save your response in chunks.

@iwrats, - I like making decisions in my house, but four other people object. Pete gregson likes making decisions about roseburn on behalf of Pete gregson.

My locality is called the grey horse (currently half the pub it used to be but wait until 8th December or much later dependent on builder, old fireplaces have been discovered) oh wait, that is my local. I don't know what my locality is?

    @gembo, ta. I found it:

    https://consult.scotland.gov.uk/empowering-schools/a-governance-review

I may have a browse around the Consultation Hub to see what other shenanigans the Scottish government are seeking uncritical support from Joe Public for.

Pete Gregson – seeking nomination to be your Labour candidate for Edinburgh Council elections 2017

    "

Does that mean he is trying to get on the list for Labour candidates (and is perhaps having problems) or forgotten to say which ward??

I wonder what Ms Hinds will think about PG Tips putting himself forward?

I loved this bit in his bio (in an ironic way):

"I have no interest in seeking revenge on those at the Council who dismissed me; life is too short for that"

On no! Of course not! KNS has got absolutely nothing to with revenge. Nothing I tell you!

I also wonder if PG Tips is aware of the disconnect between his apparent championing of the cause of the poor and disadvantaged, and his steadfast support for the rights of private motorists and small business owners over those of cyclists and pedestrians?

Perhaps, in his mind, transport is merely a purely personal choice and has nothing to do with economics, class, or income inequality.

Is Lesley Hinds not likely to be in the same CLP as this gentleman? It will be a triumph of diplomatic skill on his part if he's adopted as a candidate.

"It will be a triumph of diplomatic skill on his part if he's adopted as a candidate"

I suppose it's possible that those with any serious interest in being Labour councillors are currently in the process of leaving, so there might be a vacancy for a new generation of posttruth people(?)

PG Tips is hardly a new generation: he's been in the party since their Edinburgh heyday in the mid-1980s. He was friendly with Cllr Cardownie back in the early 90s I recall. Mr KNS is in fact part of that whole lot of local Labour types who are in the process of leaving.

"post truth people" - well he certainly fits that category. Whether it will win him a nomination is another matter.

The Scottish Local Government Partnership (SLGP) has stepped up calls for greater devolution of powers from Holyrood after Brexit and will meet Scottish Secretary David Mundell after claiming the Scottish Government has frozen them out.

Campaigner Peter Gregson, who was also listed as a potential candidate in the email, confirmed his membership of Momentum but declined to comment on his electoral intentions.

Baron Foulkes of Twitter has concerns. Apparently the left are trying to take over Labour. I'd be more concerned if Peter Gregson is trying to take over a council seat.

    Labour's draft manifesto for 2017.

Maintain 10% cycle budget; extend tram line to Newhaveb; "protect" tram route 1b to Granton.

Murrayfield CC seems pretty small-'c' conservative and quite reactionary from various reports - I wonder if they realise they've invited the Red Menace amongst themselves in the form of PG :)

Council leader Andrew Burns, who isn’t standing for re-election, said the Capital currently had control over just 20 per cent of its budget.

He said councils should be able to raise council tax “to whatever level they want, and if they make a mess of it they get kicked out [at election].”

He added: “It’s just not acceptable that we’ve only got control of 20 per cent of our own finances. That’s got to change.
