I injured my right knee recently and since then I've been conscious of being kind to it and use biomechanically sound movements. I do a lot of activities where knees can be badly messed up, which is obvious when your knees get a bit messed up. :-(

I noticed on the ride in this morning that when I turn the bike I also turn my foot slightly on the pedal to face the new direction. With a sore knee I can actually feel this shift in position happening.

Since realising this I tried to consciously pedal in a straight line even while turning. It's not easy so clearly the habit is quite well ingrained.

Is this a known pedalling problem? I've never seen anyone mention it but to be honest I don't pay a great deal of attention to discussions of proper pedalling form.

I assume I shift my weight around a bit when turning (depending on expected turn radius, surface condition/metalwork-proximity, nearby vehicles etc.) but have no idea what happens to my feet and knees as a result. I'll have to reverse my camera mount so that it can have a look for me.

I am now expecting an epidemic of falls as half of Edinburgh's cyclists try and corner while looking down at their feet ...

@steveo Not clipped, straps, fairly loose.

@sallyhinch I am not responsible for the ensuing TRAFFIC CHAOS!!

I'll probably fall off going home due to looking at my feet - damn you Dougal LOL.

On a serious note it may be an idea to try and see a physio to make sure all is OK with it

Attitude on the bike and pedals depends on how fast you are going, is it wet/dry/icy.

I am fairly sure that in fast cornering, the most stable position is to put weight on the outside pedal and steer into the corner with your inside hip/knee.

Not that simple though........the physics of cornering is strangely interesting - youtube Countersteering.
