Our nearest Scandi neighbour, the Scandi country with the least advanced cycling infrastructure, a country with a smaller population than Scotland, that is hillier and colder, that already has a better environmental and health record than Scotland has just released it's National Transport Plan.. It plans to sped $1bn on Cycleways for commuters in its' largest cities including those in the Artic!

Oh, to have the same ambition from Scotland...

"Norway doesn’t have the most obvious conditions for developing a vibrant cycling culture. Figures from 2010 show the country lagging quite far behind its neighbors. In Denmark, 17 percent of all journeys nationwide took place by bike, while in Sweden that trip share was 12 percent. In Norway the share was just 4 percent, rising to 5 percent by 2014.

The Norwegian government wants to increase this share of journeys to between 10 and 20 percent by 2030, which will take some work. "

    Paging Derek McKay!

Norway often cited by SNP types as a model for Scotland (oil, hills, remote northerly rural communities, etc.) Unfortunately all they seem to remember is the oil and the good roads.

Someone needs to point out this active travel investment to Scottish ministers.

Oh, while they're at it, can they also point out most of Norway's rail network is electrified. Norway's oil capital Stavanger has nice electric trains, whereas Aberdeen does not...

A very far sighted plan by the Norwegians. Scotland could have done something similar when it set its "world leading" climate change targets, but instead did next to nothing.

"By 2030, 75 percent of the country’s buses and 50 percent of its trucks must be low-emission, the new plan rules, while 40 percent of its short-distance ships and ferries (an important means of transit in Norway) must be either low emission or use biofuels."

"For roads repairs alone, the government wants 36 billion Kroner ($4.15 billion) and 18 billion Kroner ($2.08 billion) for railway upgrades, which puts the potential cycle highway bill into perspective. "

Still, cycling getting the equivalent of nearly 50% of the rail upgrade budget. Imagine that in Scotland! Just imagine if the equivalent of nearly 50% of, say, the budget for the EGIP programme had been spent on segregated cycling infrastructure in Scotland's cities...

It really does feel more and more like we're living in a conservative backwater of a country, in too many ways. Sigh.

"Meanwhile civilised continental European countries just get on with it" headline shocker.

While we argue over whether a bike lane should go in front of some low-grade shops or not...

Still - our politicians can rightly congratulate themselves (and they did, I saw the photos) on the huge 100m of cycle lane installed to allow cyclists to access Waverley Station. (You can find it located under the parked lorries.)
