The route into Balerno from west Lothian is now almost all new Tarmac. The road is closed 7pm to 7am at the moment to complete this job. Very nice as the road was very pitted as well as twisty.

This is great news! Saw they were doing work last week - each evening cycle towards the end of the week there was step change/improvement in the road condition! Looking forward to the work being finished!

That bit back into Balerno is very welcome.

@chdot Took but haven't yet posted a shot of that from the other end yesterday. I recall it being narrow and rutted and presumably much busier with cycling students than it was when I last regularly walked along it. Is this one of the mysterious two paths where cycling is legally unwanted?

New Meadows 'cycle highway' (above) joins to a crossing on Melville Drive which will be upgraded to a Toucan later in the year.

I'm sure the Friends of The Meadows approve.

    Can't remember, pretty sure not.

If it was Cycle Team will have sorted legalities.

    Oh Frabjous day

The stretch of towpath from hermiston to Ratho is now new Tarmac (chap I pssed says a fortnight no it was Barry, eh?). No whin stones or dust yet so very nice indeed.

But of an extended cycle home tonight via Ratho on said Tarmac. Canal towpath to decathlon, popped in for new sun specs, under bypass to GSR, back up on to canal, out to Ratho, turned back on the golf course road, by potholes, cut up to a71 then on to long dalmahoy via more new Tarmac on curriehill road, took right at former kennels at the north west heriot watt gate, mor be potholes, up to long dalmahoy, had long chat with me old kicker doug who is getting bck on bike after horrendous accident, long dalmahoy also has nice new Tarmac on the bad corner, finished on ravelrig hill. Joyous.

@gembo do you mean new tarmac on the Long Dalmahoy Road? Including the bit by the quarry? I have not been that way for ages. I might have to investigate now the evenings are getting light.

@fimm I also went the Long Dalmahoy Road yesterday. The section along by the quarry and bridge over the railway track is still in pretty bad condition. At some point last year they patched most of the pot holes between there and Herriot-Watt so is still very rideable! The ride up through Currie to the Lang Whang is pretty rough.

I'm sure the railway bridge was less bad last time I was over. It was properly knackered though so maybe I was imagining it. Maybe it was just the new bike effect...

They may have patched the bridge last year when they were working on the rest of the Long Dalmahoy - I have memories of it being much improved. Yesterday's ride would suggest the patches by the quarry aren't holding - it's pretty rough! I assume the traffic from the quarry hasn't been the kindest to the road.

bit by the bridge is very bad.

the bit on the corner between the first bit of the long dalmahoy and the next bit was fixed nicely.

Fimm, desist, the surface is still in need of repair. the canal from Ratho good

The new slope down to the new flats on the NEPN between Ainslie Park and the Crewe Road North bridge looked to be getting done today. Two mini-rollers and some sort of scraping/compacting machine were parked at the top of the slope when I went past this morning.

    Ohhhhhh
    Yes!!!!
    I forgot!!!!!
The nasty nasty horrible road surface between the railway bridge and the junction was all new and smoooooooooooooooooth the last time I went over it!!!!!
(Is that the bit Gembo means?)
(This was a while ago, I admit)
There's been some more patching/new tarmac at the Herriot-Watt end. According to BoF who goes that way more often.

Newbigging to Carnwath has brand new Tarmac today. Note the road is closed beyond newbigging heading east. Diversions around dunsyre or Biggar.

I reported elsewhere that East Lothian Council is putting in a proper wide (shared use) cycletrack between West Barns and Beltonford Roundabout. About half of it has its top surface in place and is usable - nice smooth machine rolled, lovely. The Beltonford half (beyond the East Links side road) has a vigorous hedge growning along side. I think this is going to narrow the path a bit, and of course there is the ongoing issue of keeping it trimmed back. But it should make a huge difference to be able to continue on the cycle path into West Barns instead of having to join what is a busy stretch of road at times.

Don't suppose they're removing the bollards on the path just to the west of that whilst they're at it?
