"EDINBURGH has been named as one of the worst congested cities in the UK behind London according to a new survey of traffic conditions"

I don't understand this. I regularly commute on the A8 & I hardly ever get held up. Wonder why? :-)

Amusing congestion between Elm Row and Queen Street this morning for width-impaired vehicles.

Frothing frothers in the comments blaming buses, bikes and trams for the congestion. Perhaps someone could point out that the city bypass was also on the list. How many buses, trams and bikes are on it?

AN EDINBURGH route at the centre of controversial plans which would see parts of it turned into a segregated cycleway has been named as the most congested outside of London.

The ranking comes amid proposals to convert parts of the city centre road between Roseburn and Leith Walk from four lanes to two in order to create a bi-directional cycleway separated from traffic. Traders and residents opposed to the plans have warned it would create "phenomenal congestion" along the route.

A public consultation closed in February and the council is still considering the plans.

Neil Greig, director of policy for the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said the new findings reignited calls for a bypass to divert traffic away from the Corstorphine area.

He said: "There's been no new road capacity in Edinburgh for decades. Clearly the tram has the potential to take some traffic off the road but that's yet to be proven, and unless the council can show that their strategy of having the tram and improving the bus network is actually getting people out of their cars, then they're going to have to revisit some road improvements on the west of Edinburgh because this is only going to get worse."

"then they're going to have to revisit some road improvements on the west of Edinburgh"

Apart from the blinkered approach that that demonstrates, it would be interesting to know which roads he thinks could be widened - or where a new road would be built...

    Et tu Edie?

"And he warned plans for a cycle lane between Roseburn and Haymarket could also worsen congestion.

Cllr Edie said: “I have a concern the proposed two-lane cycle route, where they want to rip out the bus lane, is not going to help.

“Buses guarantee easy access into the city centre along what is a very congested route.

“This is one of the most important bus routes in and out of the city.

“Removing the bus lane would be a retrograde step and I don’t know what transport officials are thinking about in suggesting that.”

The Lib Dems appear determined to consign themselves to political history.

    Where's Edie said this?

Sorry - thought this was same article as original post but I see it's been updated.

A good article on the Belfast congestion "problem"; I imagine the same points apply in Edinburgh:

I'm not impressed by Edie: his "alternative" suggestion for Roseburn showed he didn't understand the published plans, the 20mph plans or have any real idea about cycling design. And I thought his reply to an email expressing support was rude and patronising.

Only 4 Lothian Bus routes use West Coates/Roseburn, including the Airlink. Leith Walk has 8, the Bridges host 12. It may be the route of choice for Stagecoach/Megabus, but surely time these long-distance rail-undercutting services were deterred from "the most polluted road in Scotland (TM)"?

It'll be a cold day in Hades before the current SG does that to the Souter-Gloags, obv.

Also, is Edie not going to talk about the A90/Queesferry Road which is another on the list?

Just trying to save his own seat with his anti-cycle lane talk.

@Stickman - there are probably several good PhD theses residing in the extent to which car is king in NI, and the mindset which drives it.

The rural backroads offer some of the best cycling in the world though.

Pete & I are airing our views over on the Herald comments board...

    Usual stuff from him

We're 'hungry bedraggled itinerants' clad in 'lurex, bowling citizens down like ninepin' apparently...

Maybe someone should have a quiet word with him if he's posting such hysterical comments at 4.30am.

Amsterdam has nice wide streets he says? Maybe someone should show him the before/after photos.

Wonder if our local councillors are still happy to be associated with this level of abuse?

He's doing his cause more harm than good.

The whole problem can be summed up in one image

Note in the same article IAM are calling for more road building, does anyone have the plans for the proposed flyover across the meadows?

Well, I've tried to support HankChief in his dialogue with Mr Gregson over at the Herald. I see SRD has also joined in.

Not congested this morning. London Race Track, Easter Road remarkably quiet. Even pedestrian congestion has evaporated. Waverley station relatively peaceful.

Is half the city having a lie in or what? Some of us still have to go to work you know. :-(

Yes, isn't it lovely. Middle Meadow Walk was quite different too. It's normally thronged with pedestrians walking up the hill at the time I go to work, but today there were just a handful.

I'm at work today and Monday too :(

I wouldn't describe my ride in as 'quiet' though. fewer cars on the road, but more than made up for speeding skip lorry heading west on Polwarth Gardens, and 3 vans/lorries all of which overtook me faster and closer than usual. made for very unpleasant ride.

I'm looking forward to the traditional Easter Bank Holiday sight of a squad of parking attendants ticketing the zoo visitors parked in the Corstorphine Road Greenways after 4pm.

It's one of the signs that Spring is on its way.

Conversely, trains to Aberdeen and points north busier than usual, even for a Friday. Quite a few folk heading to visit relatives or friends for Easter, I expect.
