Suggest me a route...

    I'm planning on taking Friday off for a bit of a Biking and Birding (plus other wildlife) day for EdinburghWildlife. Only looking for about 30 miles so I can stop off a various places.

    Tentative plan so far is from Duddingston up past Craigmillar Castle, on to the Braid Hills, then through the Braidburn Valley Park to Oxgangs and meander to the Water of Leith before following that to West Coates. From there out to and over Corstorphine Hill, then down to Cramond and along the coast to Broughton Street to pick up the car from Mel's work at about 3ish (... to get home, changed, on a bus back to her work then out for dinner - this could be just about the best plan for a day off I've ever had).

    Anything I really SHOULD include? Actually. Just thinking on it who was it here did the Seven Hills as a day out? Now that could be a capital idea!

    Sorted! Can amend the route on the day according to how I'm feeling etc. Conservative couple of hours riding, with 4 and a half hours then available for walking up the hills and taking brekkie and spotting wildlife.

    Do you have a contingency back up plan if the weather is terrible? I suggest staying in bed. Usually works for me.

    Contingency plan is to go to work and take the day off on a better day - long range forecast was clear but windy. Can live with that (I may live to regret those words).

    I'd add the Cammo estate in between Corstorphine Hill and Cramond, it's not much of a detour and a lovely spot. There's also a little-used path down the side of the Almond that will take you to the Cramond Brig. It's a pleasant wee path I sometimes use for the commute. Here's a possible route leaving Corrie Hill on Clermiston Road:

    There are plenty of paths to wander on once you're in the estate, and plenty of other stuff to see if the wildlife is elusive...

    Worth following the Almond all the way to Cramond, but you'll have to carry up some steps.

    If you're wanting to walk to the highest point of each hill as part of this (and why on Earth would you not?) then remember that the top of Braid Hill is the at the southern mast, not the toposcope/trig point. Also, there are really eight hills in Edinburgh, not seven, as there are two Craiglockhart hills. The wester one is higher - the best access is probably from Glenlockhart Road.

    Bagging all seven or eight hills is a good challenge but having traversed more or less every inch of Braid Hill at one time or another, the wildlife there can be a bit thin on the ground (and in the air). You might get some nice shots of bunny rabbits, though, and perhaps check out Covenanter's Wood if you're in the Oxgangs/Dreghorn area.

    The area between the A720 and Langloan Road (between Straiton and Lasswade junctions) can be good for buzzards, and Straiton Pond is good any time of the year.

    Cammo is great - and I know a photographer out there who gets some stunning wildlife shots (some of which are on the site). I have to admit following the river to Cramond is tempting, but depends on time to get back up to the city centre for Castle Rock and Calton Hill (though I've considered an alternative route that takes them in after Arthur's Seat which would leave me clear after Corstorphine Hill.

    Hmmm, much pondering.
