"can you get tandems up the Zig Zags"
Yes.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
"can you get tandems up the Zig Zags"
Yes.
They'd be coming down... which might be more scary...
Riding alongside them last year, I was impressed by the musical accompaniment provided by their disk brakes as they came down the Royal Mile ... It was quite operatic
I've had it confirmed that the Canal Towpath by Boroughmuir HS will be closed next week, which scuppers our plans of using it from Gibson Place to Leamingtom Lift Bridge having come up from the Telfer Subway.
Alternatives seem to be either Dundee Street (using the loop road through Fountainbridge) and a right turn into Gilmore Park.
or Yeaman place with the speed bumps and parked cars.
Neither are particularly appealing, but the flatter Dundee street should mean pass through in a smoother movement than Yeaman.
I've not been along Dundee Street for a while, so any advice on it's current status would be appreciated.
My look at Streetview makes me think that we won't be able to use the pavements to walk that section as they aren't wide enough and have too many side roads.
Is Viewforth Closed? If so, where about?
For those wishing to insure their feeder rides, Bikeweek 2017 is now up and running and registering events, which gives you free insurance
I would be tempted to go via Yeamen Place, you can use the crossing to make the right turn and then a left - but I'm probably biased as this was part of my daily commute for 10 years.
Yeaman Place is one of our options if we don't fancy Dundee Street. The narrowness, speed bumps and incline means we would spread out quite a bit and no where safe to regroup.
Still may be the best Option.
If there are any child free riders who could help with the Marshalling for us please DM me. Thanks
@HankChief if the group headed up Gibson Terrace and then along the towpath it can join up with the Harrison Park feeder ride for safety in numbers and shared marshals, although the right turn and group size on the towpath may not be ideal. Just to say that I haven't consulted with fimm, who is leading the HP ride, about this suggestion.
Gibson Terrace was our route last year and it worked well, we joined onto the back of the HP ride crossing the King's Theatre junction.
Sadly the towpath is closed this year hence looking for alternatives.
@HankChief I meant turning right onto the towpath to join the HP ride at HP itself.
Oops, double post.
Ah. Gotcha. It's certainly an option.
Had a good initial response from the builder so we be okay on Dundee.
Who knew that running a feeder ride can be so much fun...
We're not only having to deal with the canal towpath being shut, roadworks on the cycle path in Dalry Road (now finished thanks to our tweet), roadworks on Dundee Street, Roadworks for Roseburn Flood Defense works, but also satisfy the police and council that we have a proper risk assessment done.
I've now found out there is some rugby cup finals on at Murrayfield on Saturday.
I think it won't be too bad as it is a whole day of rugby so I don't expect everyone to turn up early doors, but still a bit more fun & games...
I've now found out there is some rugby cup finals on at Murrayfield on Saturday.
I normally go to this (and may still head there after PoP). I doubt it'll have much effect on you at that time of day (most of the people there at 11am will be playing, and so already inside the stadium). It's one more thing to worry about, but should be minor compared to some of the others.
That's reassuring. Thanks.
I'm sure most organisers (at least of the shorter ones) will do this anyway, but there's been a suggestion on Twitter that organisers recce the routes of their rides before the off in case of broken glass, tacks, or (which seems to be the most common problem) sudden unannounced roadworks cutting off all access
We did a recce of the Leith via Lochend ride on Tuesday Evening. An early morning scout of it would be a worthwile idea, particularly as the Restalrig Path and Lochend Park can have their fair share of broken glass / burnt-out scooters of a Saturday morning.
& now we have temporary lights on Gilmore Place...
Is there a prize for the most challenging feeder ride route?
@hankchief
Footway is repaired at Telfer, but barriers still there. Maybe reminder to company needed tomorrow?
@biketrain, what have we signed up for?
Which way is the Leith feeder going? I can't join it but was going to brush the Restalrig path/Lochend Park/Meadowbank cut-through tomorrow evening.
That way! But there's now no point in using the narrow cut through now since the wide shared use was built on Lochend Butterfly Way and a hole knocked in the wall
Feeder rides are all part of the fun of @POPScotland.
Working out how to safely get across town with a range of abilities is not easy, but by bunching up into a large group and having a sensible marshalling plan it can be achieved. (We have a good team but always room for more - DM me if able to help)
Going through the formal route has got us the support we wanted at Kings Theatre, but are several hoops to go through to get it, including receiving the ironic advice that cycling a group through town is not recommended on safety grounds.... we know that's why we are doing it :-)
But it is all worth it and when Canal-Meadows and Roseburn-Canal are built we will look back fondly on the stresses involved in organising this feeder ride.
Thanks HankChief and everyone else involved in organising and marshalling the feeder rides. I'm beginning to appreciate the amount of work involved but it is appreciated and, as you say, it will be worth it in the long run.
Myself, Mrs Luath and micro Luath are planning to join the HP feeder ride for our first POP. Looking forward to it!
@hankchief
Barriers still at Telfer entrance this morning
@nedd1e_h I noticed that too this morning. The barriers don't stop me but would cause a problem for the feeder and I was planning to bring the kids in the trailer tomorrow. I will *check* that they have been removed when I pass on my way home tonight.
Oh, those barriers. I cycle past them most days. I'll have a look on the way past this evening (if I remember).
