Sutton settled in Britain, though his early and perhaps lasting impression was that British cyclists were “too soft”. When he retired he moved into coaching and he was brought into the British set-up in 2002 by Dave Brailsford. “I remember everyone really drew in their breath,” Brailsford said. “Shane’s a bit of a wild man, but what I saw in Shane more than anything was an empathy for the riders.”

The British cycling team success was "not based on motivation through fear", says Sir Dave Brailsford after Shane Sutton suspension.

Reacting to the letter, Varnish, 25, told BBC Sport on Wednesday: "I am shocked and upset by this latest news and have instructed my solicitor to appeal against the findings of the internal investigation on my behalf.

"Having provided substantial evidence to back up my complaints, to now learn that the majority were not upheld is heartbreaking. I know what was said, and I know I've told the truth.

However, according to a leaked summary of the judgment seen by The Daily Telegraph, the Australian was not actually found guilty of Varnish’s allegations. He was found guilty of a different charge, understood to have been made by someone other than Varnish during the course of the investigation, of using the term “bitches”. No context was given in the summary.

So instead of having a "stand down" period, athletes are allowed to continue competing in men's events whilst transitioning? Seems fair enough to me.
