"The person or people behind this may think it's harmless fun, but they are putting themselves and others at risk and placing unnecessary removal costs on local taxpayers."

No, I really emphatically believe that the person who put them there did not do it for "fun".

"Previous markings, saying "unsafe bike lane", appeared in March on a cycle lane in Chilwell where cyclists have injured themselves on tram tracks."

Nice bit of victim blaming there!

I'd put a cross on all the cycle symbols on advisory lanes and above put a large P for car parking (since that's what they are mostly used for).

"We are arranging to have this graffiti removed, as it is a potential distraction to drivers."

as presumably are tight bend signs, blind summit signs, "Slow" signs.... These potential dooring signs are pretty informative I reckon - many non-cyclist drivers aren't aware at all of this danger.

I had not followed the linked dooring story in that article - that is truly tragic.

I thought the thread was about a lady from Newton Mearns describing a poor performance by Michael Crawford.........

For anyone interested, the jury took the driver's side: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-20725496

    "
Sam Harding's father Keith said there was a "gap in the law".

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "Obviously the jury didn't think it was serious enough to convict him for manslaughter."
