I admire his gumption for setting up the petition, but won't the extra traffic from transporting bikes to this track just make the root problem worse?

Yes. It will need a traffic free route so people can cycle to the traffic free track.
If private cars are the only way to get to a facility then you have the bizarre situation that for every square metre of tarmac on the track you have the same amount in the car park.

No new parking required, as this is using existing land at Linlithgow Leisure centre which already has ample parking.

It's a tricky one about cars getting there and cycling racing/training for kids generally.. This will be the only car free training/racing circuit in Scotland. There are loads in England. So kids will be coming for all over Scotland. Yes, they could get a train to Linlithgow from Edinburgh/Glasgow, Dundee, but as training is organised by volunteers it tends to be in evenings after school or weekends ,so public transport to get back (particularly) is extremely limited, and it's not practical to force a 12 year old to cycle from Dundee, do the training, and then cycle back..

For those local to the area, there is a car free route, as the track will be right beside the canal. Limited use for those kids coming any distance on road bikes though...

I've signed as non-screen based activity for people needs support. My views on not using a car are distorted by living in centre of town (!)
I do understand that people can't always live beside work and leisure.
Jobs change and people often do the best they can do to combine family pressures.

So yes.... Alex is doing a good thing!

Undoubtedly this is a good thing. Great for sport, race training, etc.

A lot of the comments seemed to be along the lines of:

"Roads are too dangerous, we need this to keep our kids fit and healthy"

Teaching them that cycling is so dangerous you have to drive your bike to a specialised facility seemed a bit of a backwards way to do that.

You might say the same about shopping.

Indeed. It's the sum of all the "You need a car to do/get X" which has created the congestion/health issues we have now.

You can already replace X with "shopping", "get to work", "go to the gym", etc. Adding "ride a bike" seems a bit absurd.

Is the canal, the nern or the cycle track by the tram not car free? Not sure what this car free track means, it seems somewhat “American” having a bike track that you have to drive to.
