Today's rubbish roadworks

    On Maybury Road the western footpath, maintenance van parked blocking entire footpath. Then 3 separate temporary signs each taking up more than half the width of the path and positioned to cause maximum disruption to cyclists/pedestrians.

    All on a road with no parking/loading restrictions and a spare general traffic lane which is only pretty much only required for speeding and queueing.

    I recall that the regulations were that signs had to be positions so that they caused a minimum inconvenience to pedestrians, road users and cyclists, and where there was a minimum chance of being hit. They could be positioned on the pavement but under no circumstances must the width of the footway be reduced to less than 1m, preferably not less than 1.5m

  4. As if Haymarket wasn't bad/dangerous enough...

    Just as you exit the "S" bend on the westbound cycle lane at Haymarket Tram Stop, contracters there have placed the merge right signage for traffic right on top of the cycle lane.

    Concentrating on that tricky wee shimmy, and being aware of errant peds and sideswiping motors, meant I only really noticed this at the last minute.

    This required a swerve/emergeny stop as the motor traffic - at that point a bin lorry that had sat beside me at the ASL on Morrison Street was never letting me in. I did get a real fright before getting really angry.

    You need a few extra wits about you today if you are cycling westbound at Haymarket today folks.

    Interesting - all 3 fail to meet that, also there is a nasty one just as you descend to Ferrytoll from the Bridge which fails to meet that criterion as well. Will try emailing council tonight.

    I'll look to see whether there is an online reference which I'll quote and I'll take photos this evening.

    Yes, there are a couple that are not much fun at all, especially as they squeeze you towards the kerb next to a lane of accelerating traffic. To add insult, the actual sign of one of them is folded up so presumably not needed. It must be a real hazard in the dark as it isn't very visible.

    The one that is in use simply tells drivers that they are going to merge with the motorway, which seems pretty obvious anyway. Unclear why that couldn't be positioned on the grass rather than taking up half the path.

    see also Safety at street works and road works. There are differences in enforcing requirements depending what the works are for (eg roads authority or utility company).

  12. What I never understood is why these temporary signs have to be the A-board type that always take up a lot of width.

    Are there any legal or practical reasons not to use signs on a pole which take up hardly more space than fixed signposts or lampposts?

    @PS, glad it is not just me. And while I'm having a moan, when coming down Inverkeithing High street the entrance to the temporary path (on the Zebra crossing) is very sharp, I have to slow right down almost to a stop to make it, which is extremely unnerving when there is a driver on my back wheel...

    And has anyone seen the "Cyclists Dismount" signs on a fence on the pedestrian side of the bridge. The 3-4m wide Cycle lane is completely unaffected...

    Ah yes the usual "Cyclists must dismount when passing obstructions" nonsense, as if it's some sort of cyclecross course. The bridge's sole purpose is to allow people to pass an obstruction so their choice of wording makes be have a good chuckle.

    @Edinburgh Cycle:

    Thanks for the warning about there signs at Haymarket. Absolutely terrible placement - they could easily be moved 20 yards further along the road.
