George Berwick rode a similar distance in a much shorter time!

McNasty, what a man. Inside the link Colin provides there is another link to a 2200km audax he does from wormit to Dufftown then back to worm it for a kip and then down to the south coast of England and back to wormit. Most places he goes to are shut or full.

He has a funny writing style too.

    Same story in the EEN

Their version has this nice final paragraph:

In contrast to the British monarchy, the Dutch royal family has often been referred to as the bicycling monarchy for their more relaxed attitude - and their penchant for cycling - particularly the late Queen Juliana.

Where do jodhpurs and riding boots fit in the cycling clothing debate?

I'm sure we'd all like a large country estate with traffic-free roads safe for children to cycle on.

I've got lower expectations than royalty.

In fact I'd settle for the large royal park 200m from our door to be traffic free.

    A fine aspiration.

  11. Much as I dislike the royals and would be perfectly happy without them (if one more person tells me that they bring the tourists, and I have to remind them of the numbers who visit Versailles every year despite them having got rid of their monarchy in 1789 then I'll scream) - 'people' lap up stories about them, see them as wonderful and ambassadors and what they have and do is something to be devoured and loved and emulated.

So if some of them are getting on bikes, great.

(I'm also not sure belittling a 445 mile bike ride by pointing out other people ride further and faster is all that helpful either to be honest. It's still a big undertaking).

Interesting picture in the BBC story showing them riding four abreast. Maybe this is why she's taking burly riflemen with her, in case she gets grief from motorists.

Although, I suspect there will be several motor vehicles along for the ride too.
