Looking for the woman in pink cycling jacket that saw cyclist hit by van last night. If you see this I appreciate you coming to check if I was ok but was too stunned to talk at that point.

I need help. Bit dazed and struggling to think through what I should and shouldn't do. I'm bruised and scraped but ok. Bike in shop getting checked, some obvious damage including carbon handlebars. Driver very nice and stopped, gave me lift home. No suggestion of blame in my direction, without going into details. Gave me name and phone number and suggested I called him to confirm it was real number. Supposed to call him today. Not done anything else yet.

Neil, if I were you I'd go and see a doctor to make sure you're alright.
Your health comes first, bikes and phone numbers second.

I've tweeted and will let you know if anyone gets back to me. Can you check strava to see if her ride is on there?
Hope you're doing okay.

I hadn't thought of doing that, but you're right I think I probably should.

Go to A&E outpatients and get yourself checked out before you do anything else.
Hope this turns out alright.

@SRD thanks and good idea- I have flyby turned off though, do you think I can turn it on retrospectively?
Edit: you can, but no-one passed me at that point

Outpatients rather than GP?

Doctor doctor.
police police, however nice the driver seemed.
Get driver's insurer and their policy number, then check with the insurer that it's genuine. If driver stops seeming nice, police incident number may be required for insurance.
If injured, consider Cycle Lawyers.Posted 8 years ago # -
I'd feel more comfortable going to GP rather than A&E?

Primarily I hope you're ok, but definitely take note of all the good advice - go to the doctor, tell the police - get an incident number. Check the insurance. I really hope you're ok and this sorts itself out well but alas wingpig is right sometimes drivers do stop seeming nice...
If you ring NHS 24 and tell them you're not sure of the extent of your injuries then they will organise for either A&E or outpatients (round the back of the royal infirmary) to see you. That's probably the quickest way you'll get seen.

Take photographs of injuries.

& get driver name/address/insurance details ASAP & check them
& report it to the police - indeed, given that you've been injured, I believe the driver will commit an offence if he doesn't himself. Not that the police will prosecute it.

@algo, just saw your message- I have a GP appointment just after lunchtime
@Murun Buchstansang cue awkward incident in office where the photo of my arse is automatically uploaded to dropbox and appears in my pictures

@Murun Buchstansang - the duty to report an injury accident to Police applies if the driver did not produce a certificate of insurance at the time. They must report as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours.
@Neil - if they didn't produce their insurance certificate at the time, you might want to 'help' the driver avoid prosecution by reminding them they have to report the accident to the Police within 24 hours?

@Neil - on a slightly lighter note, I have a similar, er, posterior photo taken to record the impact of a ball bearing fired at me whilst commuting a few weeks back. To date, it hasn't accidentally surfaced in public, but I'd probably disable any "random photo screensavers" just to be safe...

@Neil, Darkerside - if there was ever an excuse to misuse the office photocopier though... Good luck with the GP. Hope you recover well.

It's actually surprisingly difficult to take a photo of your own arse, at least using a phone. Should my face be in the photo so it's clear that it's me? :P
GP said I was very lucky

Reported to the police.
Took the afternoon off.

Neil, Sounds nasty. Hope you recover quickly. If you are badly enough injured to be taking time off work then it's almost certainly worth getting some specialist cycle lawyers involved.
Remember to keep a record of all the time you need to take off your normal activities recovering.

I'm just bruised and sore, and a bit fed up, not badly injured.
He's now saying he doesn't need to provide his insurance details as he's not at fault.
Recontacted the police who said that I should go back and ask for his licence plate and address so that my insurance can get hold of his. Say I've reported it to the police if I feel comfortable doing so. If he doesn't provide it then they'll get it from him after they meet me on Friday.
So, not as straightforward as hoped.
I don't want to get into ascribing fault with him, but even if it was partly down to fault with the lights I was only doing 14mph and he should have seen me. Google maps isn't up to date and I can't remember if that feeder road is still give way now that there are lights there? It was still the main road that I was on so I presume right of way still?
He didn't say he wouldn't send his address and licence plate though which is all I need. Maybe best just to give him until tomorrow to send that through... It's Friday before I'm seeing the police anyway

Get well soon. What I always take from these stories is that no matter how contrite or concerned the driver is at the time, a few days later, once the shock has worn off, they will always try to wriggle out of it. Human nature I'm afraid.

So have I really messed up by not getting the witnesses details?
Posted 8 years ago # -
If you were in that bad shape, they should have stayed with you and insisted you take their details. Don't beat yourself up.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Easy to say this from an armchair spectator position but when hit try to stay down, try to always phone the cops and try to get witness details. Harder to do this when you have just been hit.

She may be a regular commuter in which case, once you are feeling better, you could possibly wait and see if she passes that junction again.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Aerial view in Google Maps shows signalled junction with stop lines on all entries. There have been changes to the markings here this year to put in cycle lanes that aren't on Google yet. Were you heading along A703 towards Hillend and van turned left from Bush? The signals would have been at red for the van if they were green for you.

I think it's solicitor time Neil.
Maybe worth checking if Edinburgh Uni has CCTV covering that junction.
