The council has signed a 10-year contract with intechnologyWiFi, which has been granted exclusive use of city street furniture and properties.

Councillor Frank Ross, SNP leader at the council, said: “This is great news as everyone will be able to get free access to the latest information on their favourite apps and websites while they are out and about.

Hope it's better than the free wifi on the trams and buses, which have all the bandwidth of a drinking straw.

You can't (well I have never been able to) read anything worthwhile on a device used on a bus from Corstorphine to town due to the constant severe buffeting as the wheels go through the potholes at the road edge - it's even worse than cycling that stretch, so bandwidth is irrelevant to me in that instance.

I imagine it's the same on most routes.

Just hope it doesn't lead to even more peds shuffling about with their eyes on the magic 3 inches of LCD rather than their surroundings. I was nearly taken out by one such ped today, walking on the cycle side of a meadows track and then suddenly changing direction without any reference to the real world. "Yarg, sorry," I shouted as I swerved past, which was perhaps better than he deserved. Then a more genuine "sorry" to the cyclist coming the other way who had to slow down as a result of my forced swerve.

Regardless of the bandwidth available the council should get some interesting data about where people go and what route they take.

    Hmmm. What does that mean?

That like the bus shelter debacle, they can plaster whatever street furniture they like with interweb apparatus?

It's not hard to intercept public wifi. I would recommend that you make sure you don't let your smartphone connect automatically to previouisly used unsecure public hotspots.

  8. Many roads already have free Wifi. On Morningside Rd, there are buses every few dozen metres, so you login into the bus wifi from any cafe and get a good half hour before the bus moves on.
