Is anyone planning to drive up to Pitlochry early on Sunday morning that could give me a lift (up & down) in exchange for some petrol money?

My (driving) mate has decided to defer to next year so I'm a little bit scuppered.

    Many thanks

    HC

Check coach times? Pack bike in bag & take on coach?

Tulyar, unfortunately it's an early morning start so no PT gets there on time.

HC what time would you need to be at the start in Pitlochry?

You can start anytime between 7am & 9am. So by 8.40am to give some faffing time.

    Hank

If you're registering on the day, it's only open between 8 & 8:40 allegedly

I entered but have had to defer due to family reasons, otherwise I might have had space.

My thanks to IWRATS for stepping into the breach and giving me a lift (whilst combining it with cycle exploring of his own). A good chat was had.

A grand day out over some tough climbs and a new PB for me.

Suffered my first ever bout of cramp trying to get my leg over (keep it clean) at the top of the Lecht. Managed to keep going but was in agony by the top of Cairngorm.

I fortunately managed to finish, stow my bike and get on the bus just before the heavens opened. Look a bit bleak for those finishing after me.

No bother at all, HankChief. I think the day worked out pretty well for both of us - I certainly wouldn't have got myself and the Scaffolding Bike (© gembo) into the sun-drenched Cairngorms at 09h00 without a prod from you.

Also very interesting to hear someone who, I think, regards cycling a bit like I used to regard running - a theatre for competition and a search for your inner speed limits.

You came equipped with two bidons, I came with binoculars, cheese sandwiches and a can of beer to cool in a burn at lunchtime, and I think we both got what we wanted from the day.

(I'm very intrigued by the vexed question of the six spare minutes. My wheelbuilding tutor did say to me 'You do build fast wheels I must say....'. Just a thought. Marginal gains and all that.)

    Well done HankCheif!

A friend was also riding, and also escaped the rain. Apparently the rain was so heavy that the road up to the ski centre was closed because it was flooded (i.e. due to the sheer volume of water running down it) and the later cyclists ended up sheltering in the Nethybridge hotel... did you manage to get away before all that happened?

    Thanks.

Yes - I made it home before the rain. Have heard several stories of ice-cube sized hail stones as well as flash flooding.

Apparently 200 riders were stopped at Nethybridge for 45 mins while the worst of it passed, with the hotel offering rooms and showers for them to get/stay warm.

Many never got going again and had to be picked up by the buses from there.

I count myself very lucky to have missed it.
