Comiston Road Works

Well, today is the first day of the massive temporary one-way system in South Morningside and Braid. SGN is doing lots of pipe replacement, so a block or two of Comiston Road is closed. That is significant.

The traffic management system has southbound buses – and the rest of the traffic – going up a one-way Braid Road (!) to the mini roundabout; cars go straight on*, buses go right to Braid Burn Terrace. For cyclists that road has been increasingly hostile for a few years now, the on-street parking going through the roof, the road surface increasingly neglected, yet it was the better option compared with the lunar landscape of Comiston Road itself.

Now though, CEC has installed three plastic speed bumps to reduce vehicle speeds. They were effective immediately. I hope that they are replaced in time with permanent speed bumps.

But Braid Road is now a horror to use by bike. It's also horrible to try to cross on foot – and this is school holiday time.

I ended up walking my bike up the hill to the roundabout.

    * Other options, such as turning right, are available if you're a scofflaw drivist.

Don't suppose they'll have someone standing there all day every day.

No mention of bikes of course!

I noticed that too. I turned right anyway and pretended it was for 'local access'.

Oh man, I was there today heading uphill and thought I'd push the bike to see what the fuss was about, too bad they're not resurfacing the road at the same time.

Seeing as walking the whole way was tedious I chose on this occasion to cycle on the road long before it was dug up. There's something joyful about heading uphill not having to worry about people on your tail at speed, most pleasant especially after Greenbank church.

No man in yellow jacket this morning.

    Plenty of not-buses.

Well, that EEN article is wrong in at least one key respect: the diversions were in place yesterday.

Last time they did this (which was no more than a couple of years ago IIRC) they made Braidburn Terrace one way westbound. I didn't manage to see the sign at the junction with Comiston Road when I rode the bus along there last night, but if residents are still allowed to drive eastbound along it that's going to make life plenty difficult for the buses. There were certainly plenty of parked cars* on Braidburn Terrace facing east, and at least one car trying to emerge on to the mini roundabout. (I suppose some residents might have been caught out if the diversions were put in place earlier than expected.)

    * There are always plenty of parked cars on Braidburn Terrace.
