What would happen if a disabled cyclist tried to go through there, who can't dismount? Local residents explode like volcano perhaps.

Rosie Both hands off handlebars with index and pinkie extending. To ward off vehicular evil.

Ah, if only that would actually work! :-)

  3. "... their assumed right to drive across the pavement"

Granted & legal right to drive across. There's an exception to driving on thepavement if it is to access a place where you are legally allowed to park (including private driveways). I've actually used the excuse that this should apply to bikes as well so that if there are Sheffield stands somewhere in the middle of an area you can still ride to it.

We can't complain about cars littering the streets by parking everywhere, then bemoan those who have the ability to do so exercising that ability!

I went through that way on very convoluted route to spiers bar of goldenacre where I was being picked up to head to Alloa.

    All four cyclists dismounted.

More police (well one) this morning. I stopped and chatted to him about what it would take to get police to show a presence on the main road... Nice chap. Reckoned a complaint or two would do the trick. (hmm).

As we were speaking, one of the house holders emerged with a water pistol and (rather smugly) approached the officer and said "is this an offensive weapon officer. No? Is it okay if I shoot cylists then?"

I was a bit perplexed at the non reaction to this by the officer. Apparently the man was "almost run over by a cyclist" so it makes it okay... Queue objections about any weapon being offensive in the wrong hands... And out-grouping. Queue "thanks for your time sir" reaction from PC.

Someone must have connections on that stretch of pavement...

@WC thanks for the clarification. I was trying to explore the irony of wheeled transportation using the pavements.
I will be back to using that route by bike next week.
Hopefully things will have calmed down by then.

@Hankchief: "Latest update from contractor is that the cycle Lane will be reinstated on Thursday."

Well? Has it been? I'm guessing not, surprise surprise.

Anyone getting shot with a water pistol should report to police as assault.

Still shut this morning and I'd be very surprised if it was opened today.

  9. That sounds like the police might have been there for the videographer, given the local's sarcastic comment to the police? Maybe a cyclist complained about being filmed?

It's just a ridiculous situation. Almost entirely created by misinformation and misplaced self-righteousness. I despair at times.

EDIT: self-righteousness on the part of the disgruntled locals, just in case anyone thinks I meant those passing through on bikes!

The police officer said he was there to speak / reason with cyclists. Not necessarily take any further action.

I thought it was pretty demeaning for the PC. To be sent there in the first place - but then to have to take part in Mr Water Pistol's ego trip (which it clearly was given the smug look on his face).

Whoever in Police Scotland that fielded the enquiry from the local resident or councillor should have nipped it in the bud and not been so weak and slopey shouldered as to send some poor PC out...

Reading this, I'm beginning to think the flood wall should be diverted to totally enclose at least certain houses on Riversdale to establish the State Hospital care that some of the residents require...

I did notice that the new wall beside the stadium has a very nice sandstone brick finish. Some of the locals seemed very concerned about value for money on the cycle track - wonder if they asked for a plain concrete finish on the wall to save some cash?

I'm a bit bothered by the speed cars are driven down my quiet residential street (50mph+ I reckon). Can I have a policeman to stand and talk to the drivers every evening please?

"driven down my quiet residential street (50mph+"

If so, should be able to interest police.

Not very much... Not enough for the council to do any traffic calming despite it being a common route to schools in the area.

  16. I couldn't get the police to show the slightest interest when the Shore became one way and drivers totally ignore the signs and drove aggresively at pedestrians crossing the road where no cars should have been.

Just who lives in Riversdale Cresc that has such sway with the police that they'll turn up more than once and hang around to speak to cyclists?

Any resident squirts me with a water pistol and he'll have the contents of my water bottle thrown in his face in return.

"Hello? Yes, I'd like to report a man in Riversdale Crescent who appears to be brandishing a handgun at passers-by.."

I'm sure having an armed response team turn up and point a few real guns at him would wipe the smug grin off his face.

Is squirter the same guy who was filming? Presumably he squirts you if you fail to dismount? Has anyone been squirted?

This is all getting out of proportion and the polis arriving has merely escalated it.

All very ironic as the driving at the moment is crackpot festival

Roseburn Park will be back on my regular commute from Tomorrow. What part is blocked? Is there a diversion? Any suggestions for a quiet safe route from Coatbridge Terrace to Baird Drive would be appreciated.

The Riversdale Crescent temporary path is now almost totally open to bikes, just a small section to walk.

The east entrance of the park is still closed so have to go further round to the playground to access the temporary path.

All passable, just a bit of a pain.

The path is closed from the pavilions to the NE corner of the park. You can use Roseburn Crescent and the path from the pavilions to the playpark at the southern end of the park instead.

Thanks for the input. I will give that a try in the morning.

Successfully navigated roseburn diversion. No police esort required. All good on Riversdale Cresent. Only small amount of pavement to negotiate and no local receptin committee.

Part of the fence has been moved towards the pavement at the north end. So more pushing the bike. No real hardship. A random pile of sand has appeared on the road at the south end of the fence. So watch out.

Passing through this evening a couple of cones had been very carefully placed in the middle of the bit that has been marked out for cycling. Six or seven cones had also been carefully placed on the section of pavement where you need to dismount. No doubt it stops people cycling there but people with prams or in a wheelchair wouldn't be able to get past either.

I did my civic duty and moved them out of the way.

Passing through this afternoon the cones had been put back in place, making an interesting bending route for buggies.

there's only a short section for dismounting which could have temporary ramps.

Cheered up on returning from Saughton Park because everyone was nice. I was cycling through the Park admiring the flowers. A dad and his weans on baby bike and scooter turned round a corner, on my side of the path. Dad said, "sorry, they haven't any road sense yet."

On my return on the narrow bit of path along the WoL 3 young 'uns were cycling, the oldest about 12, the others about 8 & 10. They shouted warnings to each other about me on the other side and I was really pleased to see young 'uns not being chauffered about. A lot of the wheeled bairns arrive at Saughton Park off buses by themselves carrying skateboards and BMXs or get there by cycle.

Any new vigilante activity reports? Child (7yo) is starting skating lessons at the ice rink tomorrow and with the closure the options I can see coming from the south are either Murieston/Russell Rd via the famed back streets of Roseburn or the diversion, and while normally I'd prefer the latter these stories make me a bit less sure.

I passed through yesterday and it was all quiet. A couple of other people were walking their bikes along the few metres of footway.

The cones have been moved out of the way on the short section of pavement and there is no sign of water pistol toting locals.

@IWRATS The money is also required to be spent so that the Pentlands catchment area of the Water of Leith can be kept free of trees and so continue to attract CAP upland farming subsidies.
