Just horrible, especially given all his campaigning on cycle safety. I don't know the right word - irony doesn't seem appropriate.

Bitterly unfair - on top of the usual tragedy for any family. Hadn't realised she'd been a racer in her youth

So sad listening to the announcement on the TdF highlights show last night, and Chris's tribute was very touching, brought a tear to my eye.

    Horrible, so sad.

Apparently the driver didn't stop at the scene, which doesn't seem to be in the BBC report:

    "

North Wales Police said officers were called to a roundabout on Mold Road, Connah’s Quay, just before 2pm on Saturday.

A spokesman said the crash involved a white Mitsubishi L200 pick up truck.

He had previously faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Another last minute plea. There should be reprocussions for last minute changes of heart from the accused.

@steveo, there will be. He will get a lighter sentence as his plea will be fresh in the judge's mind. Helpful killer, freed up court time.

Maximum sentence five years in prison. However, "The maximum sentence is reserved for rare cases where blame is exceptionally high."

    This bit is worrisome:
"For some offences of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving or causing death by driving whilst unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured where the offender is not considered to pose a danger of re-offending and the level of fault is low, a community sentence may be deemed a more effective form of punishment and rehabilitation than imprisonment. In some cases where the level of fault is very low the offender may be fined."

Also "If the offender pleads guilty the sentence will be reduced by up to one third depending on how early the plea was made."
