Centre manager Mary Turner said: “The new FountainPark will be bigger, better and more dynamic to meet the entertainment, leisure and dining needs of Edinburgh and the surrounding area.”

A former onsite bingo hall and an empty unit are to be demolished to make way for some of the new attractions.

Viewforth has reopened with very little of the planned improvements.

Fountainbridge has had TTL's on it for 6 weeks for "Road Realignment" - and has reopened with nothing having been done.

The new fountainpark development was given planning permission last year - no changes to surrounding roads etc.

'Among them will be a Mexican restaurant and an American-style burger joint plus two Italian restaurants, one of which has been confirmed as a Bella Italia.

New leisure facilities will include two 18-hole mini-golf courses and the Laser Station game in which players work together to beat their opponents and defend their “space base”. '

Wow. Yeah, Edinburgh really needs more restaurant outlets like these. I've literally been waiting for a mini-golf course all my life. Oh and Laser Station is a must.

    Not.

Is there anything more depressing than a purpose built leisure centre?

Fountainbridge is a mess. Road surface appalling as well.

The quote that really gets me from the article is this:-

"The project will be the centre’s first major facelift since it opened 15 years ago."

As if that's a long time. If we carry on building "leisure" facilities with big car parks that only last 15 years, we really will run out of planet quite quickly.

Not suggesting such leisure facilities are necessarily a good thing (nor that they're bad to be honest, I'm pretty ambivalent) but is this not being built on the existing site? So not taking up any more of the planet, nor changing current entrances and exits, thereby not making Dundee Street any better or worse? (would obviously have been a golden opportunity for the council to grant the permission subject to provision of some new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure of course = zero cost to the council).

The road has been marked out a few times in the past 5 years for resurfacing but never happened. I'd guess they're waiting for all the developments to be completed before doing so.

I'd expect some resurfacing as part of the new school, but it appears to have been abandoned.
