Some useful snippets of information about our city...

Edinburgh by Numbers is a yearly publication that highlights a range of information, statistics and data on Edinburgh and the city region.

Couldn't find any stats on number of hotel beds past present and future. I'm guessing at least 10% increase per year.

Edinburgh is really quite spacious. Just 8 people per acre.

Of course I assume it is using the council boundaries and so includes all the farms, roads etc rather than accurately reflecting the density of the developed areas. Thus making the comparisons to other areas such as Glagow largely irrelevant.

I think parts of Leith are meant to be some of the most densely populated in Scotland. Certainly not 8 people per acre there. 800 more like?

Anywhere with tenement flats is likely to be well into the hundreds if you take a small enough sample area.

Looking at the analysis of census data from the council (below) Leith Walk area peaks out at 52 per acre.

In common with many other cities, population densities in Edinburgh are highest in inner suburban areas surrounding the commercial core of the city centre, notably in the Leith Walk, Fountainbridge and South Side areas. The location with the highest population density in Edinburgh is the Leith Walk area, with a peak of nearly 26,000 people resident within an 800 metre radius (equivalent to a density of 12,900 persons per sq.km.). This is a higher local population density than anywhere else in Scotland, including Glasgow.

Indeed further investigation reveals that Edinburgh contains some of the highest population
densities in the UK outside London, exceeded only by Brighton and Portsmouth..."

Ah well at least I was right about it being the highest, even if I was an order of magnitude over-estimating how high!

You weren't as far out as the figures suggest. Leith Walk area includes some parks and of course Leith Walk is a large unpopulated stretch itself. An acre is about 4,000 square metres and small two bed flats could be 60 square metres (including some outside space) stacked 4 deep you could get 200 or more into the acre. So 800 isn't above the realm of possibility for some blocks in the area.

I was on a history walking tour recently where it was revealed that Balfour Street at one time had a population of 1,800.
