Westbound, Hanover to Frederick and Castle to Charlotte are "ROAD CLOSED - BICYCLES PERMITTED AT ANY TIME - LOADING PERMITTED ##:## to ##:##" or similar but Frederick to Castle is impassable (and accordingly has no cycle exemption to the closed sign) with pallets all over the place containing the frame of a pop-u moonshine distillery and roadkill burger bar or whatever's fashionable this year.

Interesting! I will no doubt see the eastbound journey up close and personal this evening.

After 2 weeks off on leave, I treated myself to a commute along George Street this morning. Myself and another commuter managed to squeeze our way through the cones/barriers (there were small, bike-sized gaps left in them, and signs at each saying cycles were allowed), through the throngs glaikit looking workies and delivery men milling around, past the variety of lorries and white vans arranged all over the place on both sides of the road and around the various gazebos and pop-up gin bars being assembled across the road.

It wasn't easy, but actually it was less threatening and uncomfortable than the usual races with taxis and delivery vans and buses and centrally-parked vehicles likely to pull out into your path at any given time.

It certainly won't be so possible during peak festivus with crowds milling around if there isn't some roughly designated and obvious lane/route for cycles.

@PS I try Moray Place and those sorts of road a couple of times a year to rr-r-r-r-r-r-remind myself why I generally dd-d-d-d-d-don't b-b-b-b-b-bb-bother with them. I only used them slightly more frequently when the sparebike had 35mm tyres.

Council's closure map doesn't bother to mention the bicycle exemption:

"George Street Festival - road closed both ways between Charlotte Square and Frederick Street; closed westbound Hanover Street to Frederick Street. Loading within these areas permitted 6.30am - 10am"

Delivery people will maybe adapt as time goes on and start hoicking the fences out of the way but this morning they were accessing the restricted bits by going the wrong way on the opposite side of the road and then swerving abruptly through the parking spaces.

I just forced my way through. Workers didn't see too bothered. Lots of cars going the wrong direction.
I've tweeted the council to see what they say about it.

True. I'm either on my relative fat-tyred Cube Central, in which case the ride isn't too bad, or I'm treating the cobbles as a reason to go fast on my singlespeed.

That route also avoids me doing the full Dublin Street.

Went east along George Street this evening. It turns into an exciting maze about halfway along, which involves weaving between installations and tents from one kerb to the other and back... but at least it was possible without dismounting or leaving the road.

I'm sure things will change when the punters move in.

Block 3 above seems to suggest being funnelled down a barriered route along the setts of the central parking bays. That will be some fun.

@CityCentreLeith @edinhelp left hand side of yellow cones is “contra flow for cyclists”.That’s mental and dangerous!

I got to George St last night about 1645. I asked a worker "where's the cycle diversion". He pointed to the yellow cones and said "contraflow is left of that".

He also said, "I'm a cyclist too, it's terrible". I could tell he was also annoyed with that was implemented.

Yesterday there were big signs at the entrances to all blocks saying "cyclists permitted at all times" (or words to those effect).

The Hanover-Frederick street block had those words obscured with gaffer tape this morning. The sort of gaffer tape that is universally carried by contractors in the business of setting up temporary events structures and staging... Just saying.

Proper black gaffer-tape which is easily-removed or the stickier silver stuff?

Black stuff which I believe is the proper "gaffer" stuff as you can't see it easily on a black stage set.

He pointed to the yellow cones and said "contraflow is left of that".

It's not just mental and dangerous, it's completely discriminatory to anyone on three wheels, or anyone with a poor sense of balance. Did someone actually sign off that "design"?

The "contraflow" cones were pretty much pressed up against the barriers this evening. Completely unnavigable. As should have been obvious to whichever idiot dreamt this up as a solution from the word go.

So that's who you are! I have seen those distinctive handlebars on the road around Picardy Place before. I will say hello to the owner next time.
