UPDATED APPEAL, SERIOUS ASSAULT, WATERLOO PLACE
Police in Edinburgh investigating a serious assault in the city centre have issued photos of a vehicle they are keen to trace the movements of.
Two men seriously assaulted a 32-year-old man on Waterloo Place around 12.40pm on Wednesday 27 July.
The suspects arrived in a white Skoda Rapid bearing the false plates DX65 ZWL that travelled towards Regent Road after the assault.
The vehicle was later abandoned and set on fire in Bingham Drive near to the Niddrie burn. Three men were seen to run off from the vehicle.
From enquiries it has been established that the vehicle was in Lutton Place in Newington on the morning of the assault and at Duddingston Row shortly before it took place.
    * The first suspect is described as around 6ft, wearing a yellow cycling top, black cap and sunglasses.
    * The second suspect is described as around 5ft 6in – 5ft 8in, wearing a blue cycling top, black cap and sunglasses.
    * The only description available for the third suspect is he had short dark hair and was wearing a yellow top.
Police will be conducting enquiries in Waterloo Place at lunchtime today to trace further witnesses.
Detective Inspector Grant Johnston, of Gayfield CID, said: “We’re appealing for anyone who witnessed the event in Waterloo Place, or saw the vehicle before or after the event to get in touch.
"It is a distinctive vehicle and I’m hoping that the pictures may jog someone’s memory about seeing the vehicle, perhaps in unusual or suspicious circumstances, last Wednesday morning or around the time of the incident.”
Those with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

From the photos at the bottom, the police are right - I guess back pockets are as handy for concealing chibs as they are for carrying tubes or gels.

Oh, he was the guy that shot up the Gauntlet! I remember that, a good friend of mine used to live on that square in Broomhouse. I'm not trying to say he's glad that he no longer lives there ... actually yes that's exactly what I'm saying.

But, the 31 year-old helped get himself caught after being clocked buying distinctive cycling gear worn during the attack.

    'snoods'?

Buffs. Think it's a portmanteau of scarf and hood, with an extra n just to confuse me.

The fools, they should have done it on bikes, not just in cycling gear, then they would have been invisible...

It's to their credit that their subconscious minds clearly wanted to be caught and punished.

Snoods were a thing when I was a teenager - a knitted tube, much looser than a buff, usually worn either round the neck or in the cowl style covering the head and coming down to the neck. My Mum liked hers because it kept her ears nice and warm.

Snood goes back to at least Old English and then gets lost. I have recently discovered the venerable item of 'hap' which opens the world to a great degree of wordplay.

Lucy Maud Montgomery references them in one of her books, as I recall. Or Louisa May Alcott?

I just thought it was funny in this context.

I was sure it was going to be Wiggins.
