    Hello all,

I'm looking for a bit of advice, I'm riding TOTB on Sunday morning and it looks like it's going to be a bit on the windy side. I've invested in a bit of bike 'bling' and got a set of 50mm deep rim wheels and haven't tested them in anything too windy. With forecasted gusts of 35-40mph, has anyone had experience riding these types of wheels in windy conditions? Should I stick the Zondas back on, or risk it? I'm 80kg btw.

    Thanks in advance.

So I should just stay home?

I've got some serious deep section rims for my TT bike, and I struggle when it gets windy. One compromise that you might consider is to run the deep-section back and the normal front - I do this quite often. It is the front wheel that you really notice getting caught in the wind. But in your position I would go back to your non-deep section wheels.

However I am quite a bit lighter than you and female (therefore less upper body strength) and not the most confident bike handler. So you might be OK. But I wouldn't, myself!

Thanks for the info fimm, I was thinking of running 50mm on the rear and 26mm Zondas on the front, that way I get a bit of aero whilst having more control.

Good luck on Sunday, I thought about entering but never got around to it and I must admit the cost put me off.
I'd be interested to hear how it goes.

TOTB facebook page is saying they are having a meeting at noon today to discuss the weather for Sunday morning. Fingers crossed it’s not cancelled.

@redmist - It is pricey, but for me, worth it for closed roads.

Oh, that sounds ominous. Fingers crossed. I was looking at the Ken Laidlaw sportive in a couple of weeks but that's been cancelled, I don't know why.
I understand on the closed roads thing, it also good to have something to train for !

@redmist - it always good to train for an event, keeps me motivated and fit. If cancelled, I'll probably end up going to the pub!

Oh, that would be a shame. Boyfriend of Fimm is also due to be riding, also looking forwards to the closed roads. He will be most disappointed if it is cancelled.

My other half is cycling too, so we few our babysitter in from Brussels (my brother) for the weekend. As I said, if it doesn't happen the babysitter and I will make use of the time, in the pub.

Personally I would not ride deep section in winds that high. Not least because I think everyone will be in survival mode rather than 'set a good time' mode. I am also supposed to be doing TOTB but I am inclined to bin it. I'm doing it for fun & while I might go out on my own in those conditions, riding in a group is a different matter. It is pretty exposed on the top of the hills so I would expect the wind would be even worse up there. I'm going to make my mind up this evening. :-(
EDIT Also, in answer to your question, given
The conditions I doubt deep section will be any quicker as you might be struggling to control.

I find my h+son rims difficult to handle in strong winds and they're only 25mm deep.

That's a pain, i had a long route into Fife planned for Sunday and last time I had checked the weather was supposed to be nice! Hopefully it changes again....

(I appreciate more of a pain if you've paid for an event and/or trained for something specific!)

Looks like ToB has got the green light so hope it goes well for all taking part - do let us know how you got on.

Yeah! Weather apparently improving, fingers crossed I'll be able to go 'bling' with the big wheels!

    Positive spin.....tailwind up Talla!

(none of the climbs I have planned for Sunday will work out as having a tailwind...)

Bit the bullet and took the Bullets (50mm wheels) to Tour o The Borders yesterday. For me, it was an interesting experiment to see how deep rim wheels would behave in very windy condition. They handled incredibly well into the wind and with a tailwind, there were a few moments where a crosswind would catch me, but nothing too serious, but I think everyone had the same problem.

Considering how crazy the wind was yesterday, I'd have no problem taking them out again in similar conditions.
