    Dear Sir or Madam

We are writing to inform you that the Council has updated its strategic environmental assessment of the Edinburgh Local Development Plan. The update assesses the modifications recommended in the report of examination for the Plan, which is now available to view at the website below.

The modifications recommended by the examination report include the addition of five new housing sites. All of these already have planning permission granted at appeal.

The Plan’s Environmental Report is now available for a fourth period of consultation. It can be viewed at:

    • Planning and Building Standards Reception, Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, Edinburgh between the hours of 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and 9.00am to 1.00pm Friday.
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/localdevelopmentplan (see ‘Second Proposed Local Development Plan’)

Written comments are particularly invited on the updated sections of the Environmental Report. Comments should be submitted electronically to localdevelopmentplan@edinburgh.gov.uk or by post to: Local Development Plan Team, Business Centre G.3, Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, Edinburgh, EH8 8BG by 5pm Monday 22 August 2016.

The modifications are due to be reported to the Council Planning Committee on 5 September then published in mid September. The Plan is due to be adopted in October or November 2016.

    Kind regards
    LDP Project Team

Something of particular interest to this audience is the map which shows protected routes for future cycle paths: http://edinburghcouncilmaps.info/planning/secondproposedLDP.htm (turn on the Cycleway/Footpath Safeguard layer).

    What do people reckon?

Some points of interest on the plan:

    - No housing proposal marked at the Garden District. (W of bypass nr Gogarburn).
    - Houses proposed on western strip of the Zoo.
    - Cycleway safeguard marked to connect end of Slateford Yds railway access to Meggetland.
    - NO cycleway safeguard across car park (former Range site) from Milton Link to Gilberstoun / old railway alignment.

It's worth a look (especially around your area) to see if what they propose makes sense...

eddie_h, I found the zoo interesting too. At first I thought it was just a strip of unused land but then I realised it actually includes some substantial parts of the zoo. for instance the panda and rhino enclosures (although not the penguins).

I thought Craigiehall Barracks were earmarked for development but they're not part of the plan.

What is meant by the "safeguards" for cycle/footways? Are these paths which are identified as future nice to have? Or actually planned?

Noticed one in my neck of the woods - says it's "with developer" but it isn't directly adjacent to a proposed development, doesn't identify the development it is with, and it goes through a forest which doesn't have great linking paths at either end. Very confusing!

"Land on the western edge of the zoo which is no
longer required for zoo purposes. Opportunity for
high quality housing development within a mature
    landscape setting."

Thought that zoo proposal was rejected a few years ago?

A few other interesting Cycleway/Footpath Safeguard sections:

    - A link from the Loanhead cycle path across the Lang Loan towards Straiton Road.
    - A few twiddly bits around the Kirk Brae/Liberton Brae/Mayfield Road junction
    - Millar Crescent/Maxwell St to Colinton Road following the Soth Sub.

It sounds like the plan is hopelessly out of date, or inaccurate. If so, why are they proposing it now?

    Surely this stuff is important?
