Lochrin to Leamington, 1970 (and other old films)

It's a snippet from a longer film, but fascinating to see what's changed (and what's not) since this was shot. The "Clincher Tyres" (North British Rubber) factory came and went (to Newbridge, where it's also been and gone) as has the Fountain Brewery. All the buildings at the Lochrin Basin are gone too.

The large chimney about 0:33 in is the old Tollcross Tramway depot, originally had a winding engine in it for the cable-hauled network. Now the site of the fire station.

At 00:50 can be seen the old red brick St. Cuthbert's Co-op bakery.

At 00:59 there's a close up on the back of the old Palais de Dance, former cinema and dance hall, latterly bingo hall and luxury pigeon loft.

We finish with a close-up of part of Lothian House, marking the old Port Hopetoun basin. St. Kentigern's church is bricked up even then, but is still here now.

Maybe the descendants of the swans are still there?

Lots of 1940s wartime cycling in this ARP propaganda video.

At 00:20, Davidsons Mains I think? There's an Ebenezerburgh polis box in the background anyway.

Then at 01:25 a crossing of the Water of Leith by bicycle, just off Riversdale Crescent (topical!)

More cycling at 03:53, Barnton Ave / Cramond Road South I think, filmed from the old Railway Embankment. There was a village hall there that the men are going into. Local place names can be seen on the phone number chart on the wall behind the officers in this scene.

Man down on his bike at 14:51. More aquatics and cyclocross at 16:30. Followed by a drag race across Roseburn Park. Some high-speed dismounts at 17:50, racing through Roseburn Park again, cyclists have been clearly winding up the Friends of the Park for at least 60 years!

Cycle messenger race commences at 23:57.

Not 100% sure where the Fire Engine is arriving at 24:16, but I think it's coming down Groathill Avenue and turning into Craigleith Quarry (what is now the goods entrance to the shopping centre), some of the old buildings there would have been perfect for staging an ARP exercise. The housing fits, bungalows up the hill with some 2-storeys at the top on the left. There's a level crossing gate to a railway yard with a train rumbling past at 27 minutes, which I think is what is now the council roads department storage depot you can see from the cycle path just by the junction with the Barnton path. You can see the rails in the road which was the old branch into the quarry.

It ends with a victory cigarette. Like all things in the 1940s did.

    Lots of cyclists leaving Brown Brothers Rosebank Works in this short one;

Rosebank Works was opposite the Powderhall Refuse Compactor, now the romantically named North Pilrig Heights. The nautical connection with the "Second Snark" later in this film is that Brown Brothers made ships' stabilisers. This vessel was taken over by Brown Brothers in 1963 when the previous owners, the Wm. Denny shipyard of Dumbarton closed. (Denny also had interests in the ship stabiliser market)

Wow. They've got films shot by my grandfather on there (I knew they existed, so did a search for his name out of curiosity, and there they were). I wonder if they'd be interested in more detail about what they've got? I'm sure my mother and her brothers could provide names and places in more detail. I might email them and ask.

@fimm I was looking for a button to provide info, as these sort of sites (Scran, Britain from Above, Canmore) normally do. Alas there is none, but I'm sure they'll be interested in more detail.

I've dropped them an email, so we'll see.
    Here's one:

(No bicycles, just a caravan. I think the small boy with the boat is either my uncle or my mother's cousin.)
