Not the first fatality within the speed limited (no laughing at the back) part of the A82 in/north of FW.

    RIP Jason MacIntyre

And lest we forget some of the less enlightened types up there:

    "
The organisers are not going to listen if it’s just me," says organiser...

The Lochaber businesswoman who was calling for "assertive action" against two bike rides scheduled to use the A82 on the same day has abandoned the idea of a protest because of lack of local support.

While obviously sad, the death that sallyhinch links to does read to me like a 1-vehicle accident:
"A 22-year-old cyclist from Wanlockhead has died in hospital after falling from his bike near Mennock ... suffered a serious head injury in the accident on the B797."

The descent from Wanlockhead to Mennock can be taken very, very fast - I've ridden it.

The cyclist killed by the driver of the lorry in Fort William is obviously different.

@Fimm - yes, nobody seems to know anything concrete about it (I think he was found lying beside his bike). It was just a striking coincidence, as I'd been rung up by the local paper to comment about the previous death only yesterday. Otherwise it's been a relatively un-lethal year for Scottish cyclists, thankfully

Sad news. The Daily Record says "his bike crashed into a lorry at the A830 roundabout". The Herald says he was "killed after being hit by lorry ... close to the junction with the A830". Other reports suggest it was near Jewson's, 300m south of the roundabout. At least some of these reports are wrong, so we can't judge what happened or why.

Re the crash near Mennock, reported as not involving any other vehicle: 8 of the 41 cyclist fatal accidents reported on roads in Scotland in 2009-13 were recorded as not involving another vehicle.

Has dropped off the front page of the BBC Scotland news already.

Clearly "BFG Dream Jar vandalised in central Glasgow" and other such nonsense is viewed as of more importance than the death of one of the "out-group".

    Disgusting.

@Murun, how many other crashes that have killed one person have there been on Scotland's roads this week? How much coverage have those deaths had?

I read somewhere a discussion (about London in particular IIRC) that suggested that the deaths of cyclists get over reported relative to the deaths of other kinds of road users (the comparison group might possibly have been motorcyclists in particular, I can't remember) and that this over reporting adds to the perception that cycling is particularly dangerous.

I'm fairly sure I've seen people who have had a heart attack while cycling included in lists of cyclist fatalities, which seems strange to me. Do they include people who have a heart attack while driving in deaths associated with car use?

    @fimm

This sat on the front of the BBC Scotland news all yesterday.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-37117204

Almost any crash that closes a Highland trunk road for a number of hours, fatal or otherwise, IMV gets more front page coverage than this got. Throw in the background of an highly experienced cyclist killed on the same stretch of road in the last few years and I think the BBC didn't serve the public interest here. An FAI was conducted into the previous incident, there's a ghost bike placed nearby etc so there is a fair amount of public knowledge of it.

I obviously don't think cycling is particularly dangerous but some locations are certainly more dangerous than others due to poor road design or poor driving, and in the absence of a clear willingness on the parts of the powers that be to resolve these, I would prefer to keep my own mental map of possible hotspots.

@fimm the the standards for official accident reports are set out in STATS20. Casualties who die from natural causes eg heart attacks shouldn't be included. But someone who has a heart attack which causes them to crash their vehicle and the injuries from the crash kill them should be included. That might be more likely for cyclists/motorcyclists than for drivers in cars.

seems it was a touring cyclist on the A82. http://road.cc/content/news/201632-foreign-touring-cyclist-killed-lorry-highlands-road
