Sounded ferocious from inside the house, but on the bike wasn't too bad. Maybe my route is quite sheltered.
Roads seemed really busy (with cars) this morning though.

I was a little bit surprised at how much of a non-event the wind was this morning after the terrifying predictions from Met Check.

Agree that the roads were particularly busy today, and seem to have been all week.

Change in weather and daylight driving people off of public transport or walking / cycling into their 4 wheeled blankies?

Almost ran over a schoolkid this morning. Filtering up to the lights at Corstorphine Primary on a red, metallic orange Beamer infront of me still rolling too. Offside passenger door opens and a wee boy appears infront of me! Fortunately he was a sprightly young thing and had the door shut and was on the pavement before I had a chance to crash into them. Looked like he was well practiced in rolling decamps from daddy's pride and joy.

  4. Sounds a bizarre dropping off kaputnik!

Yeah, was expecting the wind to be horrific this morning, but not much doing.

Yeah and they were talking about force 11 off the west coast.

    Don't understand this weather 'forecasting'.

    Do they get paid??

    Do they get paid??

Yes, they do, but not terribly well, unless you become a TV weather presenter. I believe you also have to move around the country to various air force bases whilst you do your training...

Perhaps the next bout of predicted windy weather will be more accurate, in about 10 hours time, with gusts of up to 80 mph! The met office took such a lambasting for their poor forecasting of the October 87 hurricane, I think that they would rather exaggerate than underestimate!!

There must be money in it... what with the proliferating number of weather forecasting sites, they are all at it, every email server as well as independent ones.

You didn't buy an 'i' did you?

What did you think? I noted a lack of 'outrage, anger or disappointment' in their smallish headlines.

And other things - long journey.

Just been stuck outside Doncaster because of "congestion"!

Unlike Mr Angry (of Purley). Why would anyone buy a newspaper these days? To be read in caffs when schlurping italian sounding coffee beverages.

Phew. I was certainly on the move riding home today - I hit 28mph on one bit where normally I'd be trying for 20. I also had a couple of sidewind-assisted moments and gratuitous braking action.

  14. hmmmm, could be an interesting ride home in 20 minutes if that's the case...

okay so the wind got up a bit. I freewheeled through Chesser and into Gorgie at 28mph.

Nearly stalled a couple of times trying to get up Broughton Street and round Picardy Place roundabout

Wind and rain for me. It was spitting as I left Haymarket but had increased to heavy as I unlocked my bike so I had an undignified few minutes throwing on all my waterproofs outside Ryrie's, trying to stop various items blowing away.

Need to head out again soon. Pah.

I seemed to get off quite lightly which was a relief. Didn't even get blown away on North Bridge. It might have been because I was hiding in the bus lane and possibly a bit protected from the wind. Or I was just lucky..

Brutal ride home last night, had to take the mtb to carry some stuff so couldn't even get down on the drops to get out of the wind. About half way along Gorgie my waterproof stopped!

This morning was bare arms and light gloves. Some of the gusts at lunchtime felt and smelt like snowy mountains, making me glad I'd brought the rest of my stuff anyway. Wondering which way to head home to avoid any wind in the face...

"Wondering which way to head home to avoid any wind in the face"

Planning a route that involves sharp tacking?

Hope you don't find any sharp tacks...

I've been detouring via Granton/Newhaven recently but this might result in some headwind if that forecast wind direction is accurate, whereas if I head out east under cover of the Innocent there should be some assistance for the final bit from Musselburgh-Leith, and less people on my side of the road. Then again, I had a mosque curry for lunch and could probably do with some additional exertion to use it all up.

I've been remembering to deploy my fluorescent rain cover recently but might stow it in case a gust catches it.

  26. Well, given the wind looks south-easterly, and I'm heading east and slightly south... Damn.

I had a tailwind up the Innocent! Knocked two minutes off my time. Marvellous!

phew! That worked up quite a sweat! It was pretty constant rather than gusty which helped - felt at its strongest along Fountainbridge, approaching the contraflow outside Cargo.

Don't know if it's related to the weather but looks like a sporty car (MR2?) has been front and rear-ended on Melville Drive. Blues and Twos in attendance, remains of car being winched onto a flatbed. Traffic queuing right back along the road. Much confusion at the toucan crossing at Argyle Place drivers continued through the reds when people were crossing as they were too busy rubbernecking

I was on the little Brompton today. I thought I was cranking along quite nicely towards Morningside and into the wind, and working up a good head of steam, then looked at my speedo and was dismayed to find that 14mph was the best I could manage. I'm sure my tyres deflated themselves to about 3psi at that precise moment, or it certainly felt like it.

Vauxhall VX220. I was passing before the flatbed had arrived - I think the rear ending was from a truck. Was wondering what was causing the queue as I started riding west to east. I thanked the polis who was directing traffic when I went by - not many car drivers going to have been able to do that, and figured it might make standing out in the cold and the wind with nought to keep him warm but vigorous arm-waving at traffic just that little bit easier.
