The tram and forthcoming Gogar tram-train interchange are fantastic stuff but fundamentally, we do not have a road access solution yet. “We may very soon be in the position of Edinburgh Airport building public roads.

This is a real cusp moment.” Mr Dewar told The Scotsman later the airport would be a “significant contributor” to the project, but no route or cost had been determined.

He said a link to the M8 would eventually be required.

Classic stuff. I travel less than I used to for work, but it's clear the volume of cars on the access road exceeds capacity at peak times.

So the solution - Build a new road?????

And where, pray tell, will those drivers go when they arrive at the airport? Are they building more parking, are drop off and pick up facilities improving? Will they just magically disappear????

Because a new road with nowhere to put cars just kicks the problem further down the road or into someone else's street.

It's blatantly obvious that public transport (i include taxis) is the only sensible solution to accessing the airport from Edinburgh (I appreciate it might not be as simple if you live in Fife).

But all they propose is "another access road".

    Just brilliant......

The motorway access road could be privately built and owned, with the owners charging market rates for its use (to limit demand to below its capacity).

You know... like a capitalist system.

When it costs £5 to drive your car into the airport, tram and buses suddenly become favourable.

(Followed by wails of, "oh, but tax on hard-pressed motorists, families, holiday makers...")

The local road can be kept to service other properties with access to the airport blocked.

Cyclists can access the airport via a (newly constructed) off-road path following the tram line from the RBS stop.

I see that the interchange being built at the Gogar roundabout aims to join up the train line to the trams. When it's finished, it should hopefully be an excellent connection for anyone coming by train over the bridge. Don't know much about the project, but did spot it when I was cycling there last week.

Is there anywhere secure to leave your bike? Like lockers not Sheffield stands.

Bicycles are highly dangerous machines operated by subversives and potentially packed full of explosives and depleted Uranium.

    So no chance.

You ride to the airport, pop the wheels off, bind the whole lot in plastic and send it through the oversize/awkward luggage transport. #naesnakey

I used to work there. A shelter exists at the eastmost entrance where you can park safely but the road in is a danger. As bad as the trams are I was glad to hear they were letting bikes on. This meant I could get on at gogarburn and walk it to the park.

The international (old) end of the airport is pretty grim these days. Up and down stairs all the time on arrival, no toilets before immigration. The contrast with the amount of money spent on gates 5 and up is stark.
