I've got a pass to do a ride on Monday, leaving from Morningside at 0820 and got to be back by 1500 at the latest. I reckon that gives me something like 65-70 miles to play with.

    Where should I go?

I've recently done Talla Reservoir, Redstone Rigg, the two bridges (twice, and using a different Kincardine bridge on each occasion), the Bathgate Alps, lots of trips up and down the Lang Wang (including a circuit of the Pentlands) and I'm running out of ideas.

I'd welcome any suggestions of lovely local rides :-)

Two different rides of course! (For anyone wondering how they are connected). Knowes Farm is near East Linton on JMT.

How about sprint training to get to Roseburn before the main group ;-)

Falkirk wheel and back along the canal - please note that the surface is not that great in bits and it is safer to walk for approx 1/2 mile at the Falkirk tunnel.

How about the Col du Climpy?

(Not my name for it; there used to be a route description online for it but that was associated with a bike shop that doesn't exist any more.)

EDIT just noticed you said you'd been up and down the Lang Wang too many times.

I like the route I did today but it probably isn't quite long enough to suit:

    EDIT (again) how about this:

@HC - unfortunately, there's a school run to do before I get to ride where I want...

@fimm - Col du Climpy. Now there's an idea... I don't dislike the Lang Wang, it's just that I'm bored with it.

@steveo - I had previously been inspired by Dave's words and route and once accidentally turned left in Carnwath rather than turning round. It was very pleasant. I do note that the bike lanes in Penicuik are now wider than they were, so the return leg is pleasanter than he describes it.

10 minutes from Morningside to Roseburn, would be a good challenge ;-)

When are you starting your tapering for the big event?

The Moorfoots are lovely at the moment, resplendent in purple. You can make a loop using the coach Road through Stow or on the other side going through West Linton.

Or you can go other the Granites to Heriot, down the coach Road to Stow (nice cafe) and over to Lauder by one of two routes (another 2 cafes) or even down to Melrose (perhaps back on train)

Yesterday I had a great cycle starting from Lothianburn golf course, heading to Rosewell, Carrington, Temple, to the top of the Granites and down to Innerleithen. From there you cross the Tweed and head east to Clovenfords. Take the wee road over the hill to Stow and keepheading north to Heriot and eventually the same road over the Granites that you started on. You can retrace your route back to the bypass.

The heather looks superb at this time of year, the roads are very quiet once you get past Rosewell.

Over Auchercorth moss to West Linton, Station Road to Whitmuir for café stop then over Shiplaw to return by Gladhouse reservoir?

This thread is now full of wonderful suggestions. I am spoiled for choice! I was down Peebles way today and the heather was looking lovely.

    Good routes

You could also consider fauldhouse (Lang whang west Calder addiewell to get there) over to harthill on the fala hill road which is nice then over to blackridge then up over the slamaanan plateau (well east bit of it) to avonbridge then torphicen and back to Edinburgh through the Alps.
