"I hope CEC will put several cameras on RT to check on actual usage of existing loading/parking."

It'd be nice if there was an ANPR-enabled camera there so that the journeys of people passing along Roseburn Terrace could be mapped and the ire of concerned local residents diverted to all these people driving through from all over the central belt and taking up local road-space without having the decency to support the local shops as they pass.

I hope CEC will put several cameras on RT to check on actual usage of existing loading/parking.

I've asked the council for information on how many parking tickets have been issued recently. Can do likewise in a couple of months and see if anything's changed.

The BBC's reporting of this is interesting:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-37219542
"Cycle path plans backed by councillors
Plans for a controversial cycle path through Edinburgh have been agreed in principle by city councillors. But the council is to set up a group to "resolve outstanding design issues". ... Transport convener Councillor Lesley Hinds said the council was still "100% committed" to the project but acknowledged it had divided opinion."

    @fimm:

    Interesting as in inaccurate?!

The plans include reducing four lanes of traffic from Roseburn to Haymarket to two, and using half a carriageway and a bus lane for cyclists.

Interesting how BBC illustrates a cycle path too, with an advanced stop zone and a large sunken iron cover just where a bike would be likely to stop.

Think of ideas as if we lived in a great cycling city... Where anything is possible. When people start thinking about "something better than Option A" (which I'm going to call Option A+)...

Can we get a segregated cycle route from Comely Bank, up and across QFR with a nice signalled junction, up to Ravelston Dykes and through the backstreets (Lennel Av, Campbell Av) and on to A8 at Bothy Bar ish.

Improves access to e.g, WGH, Police HQ, schools, Stockbridge without being a massive zig zag getting on and off NEPN.
Most of the route is rat run territory, so locals would probably welcome traffic calming (this one certainly would, Mr Smart of MCC probably would like the idea of slowing down stuff outside his door too...)

Oh and I'd like segregated cycle lanes on Crewe Rd South while I'm at it. Thanks xxxx :)

Has anyone compared quantitatively the existing and proposed loading space with similar streets in the city? Ratcliffe Terrace for example.

The easy bit of segregation that Edinburgh is crying out for is from Craigleith along Queensferry Road to the West End. Massively wide road, already down to 1 lane each way. It would be easy. Paint a line down the middle of the pavement each side of Dean Bridge. Done.

Yes, that too! But I'd like it properly segregated please, especially around Stewarts Melville at drop off time.

@stickman Option B was considered early on. I was at the initial stakeholders consultation and I think it was rejected because the Russell road/ Roseburn st junction is tricky enough already. Note that none of the shopkeeper attended. The council say they were hand delivered invitations. They say they didn't know about it, but at that initial stakeholder meeting, the man from murrayfield community council said that the shopkeepers were all against the cycle path. So they did know about the path from very early on and chose not to engage. Now we go round the houses again with another stakeholders meeting. I guess this time they'll bother to turn up.

@LivD; I use that route quite a bit, so +1 for that - and for proper cycle lanes on Crewe Rd, there's plenty of room for them. And better cycle/ped provision just along the road in Stockbridge - Raeburn Place is choked with parked cars and the pavements are ridiculously narrow in places. Actually, while we're in make-a-wish land, I'd like the route south from Comely Bank to be a tunnel, avoiding the Crewe Rd roundabout and that big climb up Orchard Rd N and S, and emerging beside Carrick Knowe golf course next to the Pinkhill path. It could have a branch to the NEPN at Ravelston Dykes. Maybe some day ...

At the risk of this thread becoming a wishlist thread I'd still like the council to do something about Maybury Road. There's Lots of dead space and empty carriageway which means cars driving faster than the 40mph limit and passing cyclists who choose to use the road. Most cyclists just choose to use the pavement.

The cheap option would be to widen the pavement, make it shared use and put in some dropped kerbs. The better option would be to use some of the dead space for properly segregated cycle lanes.

Lothian Rd. Massively wide, 7 traffic lanes in places. Should be easy to create a segregated facility.

If the East-West route finally happens, it's a no-brainer to extend a segregated bike lane eastwards along Waterlloo Place, Regent Road and Montrose Terrace as far as London Road. Only 'tricky' bit is which side of Waterloo Place to use: maybe both? One way each side... Then double lane on southern side of Regent Road, replacing extremely under-used car parking. Then on south side of Montrose Terrace, which is the quitter side, hardly any shops, not much parking demand.

Ideally you then carry on along London Road, through Meadowbank, and on to Portobello Road. However Lothian Buses might have something to say about that...

London Road west of Easter Road junction is crying out for a segregated bike lane too. North side makes the most sense, as only one junction between Easter Road and Elm Row. Could connect to segregated lanes at new Elm Row junction which will eventually replace that horrendous roundabout.

These two cycle lanes would eventually create segregated routes linking York Place and Princes Street with routes to the east of Edinburgh, Portobello, etc.

At the risk of this thread becoming a wishlist thread

Some of the suggestions (or at least the locations) are in the list of future projects that have for funding for external design. Maybe move these discussions over to this thread?

@daisydaisy That's interesting history about the Roseburn traders knowing about the initial consultation but not choosing to engage. My suspicious mind had always thought there might be more to it, and I'm surprised that the "we weren't consulted" gained so much traction. Are you in a position, and would it be worthwhile to inform councillors about that?

This will disappear soon from the front page of the Cooncil website. You can see how the Cooncil has presented it.

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/2133/councillors_agree_to_progress_city_centre_west_to_east_cycle_link_scheme

Members of the Council's Transport and Environment Committee today agreed to proceed with an ambitious project to create a family-friendly west to east cycle route through the city

(Someone else has probably pointed to this but can't keep up with all the news/gossip/rumours at the mo.)

@ih It's hard to prove anything. I have just written to my local councillors to suggest that in future invitations are sent by recorded delivery.

@daisydaisy I don't want to make a big deal out of it and it's entirely up to you, but if they were told that Mr so and so from MCC told me that....at least he would have to lie to deny it. Probably not productive however, it's not a legal case! I just can't stand liars though.

Seeing as PG keeps claiming that Roseburn Terrace would go from 4 to 2 lanes, I think it's only reasonable that the new improved OptionA1 design should have a segregated cycle lane on both sides.

Just out of interest I've been idly googling to see what else Murrayfield Community Council have objected to over the years.

    http://m.heraldscotland.com/news/12182879.Murrayfield_residents_look_back_in_anger_over_concert_Residents_trash_concert_litter_louts/

Mr Robert Smart, chairman of Murrayfield Community Council, said...

''The community council is not against these events but we want the whole impact of these special events on the area and the repercussions for the local population looked at in detail.

''We need to look at more than just traffic.''

What else should they look at? Funny you should ask.

    http://www.scotsman.com/news/hearts-face-massive-murrayfield-protest-1-901259

Robert Smart, chairman of Murrayfield Community Council, said: ""We’re talking about serious disruption which is without doubt going to have an impact on property prices.

@WC: agreed, but it's the focus on property prices that was so predictable.

Interesting: Nick Gardner is going to send me an email of his account of "where we are"....

This was has tweet after the decision:

#OptionA clearly a jewel to place in the cycleroute crown. Supporting @LAHinds proposal to break deadlock & try to bring all parties 2gether

    Who's Nick Gardner?

Do we know yet what the focus of the group will be? If it is focussed on tweaking Option A I can see it being ok. If it allows random suggestions (e.g. "what about parachutes for cyclists so they can be airdropped into Haymarket?") aimed at getting rid of the lane entirely it'll never get anywhere.
