Beard, trousers or bike?

Excellent. I always used to pass that guy heading south over High Street/Bank Street down George IV when I was heading to Dundas Street.

That's a great beard. Less keen on the shoes, but I ain't gonna argue with a beard of those proportions.

He and I quite often compete for somewhere/something to chain our respective bikes up/to. He wears similar attire all year round making little concession to the elements. Maybe his beard keeps him warm...

That's a priest bike also known as Kruisframe and Pastoorsfiets.
It's not an antiquity, you can still get them.

Need to have a keek inside my chaincase. I think it was submerged this morning. The hubs were running in the bow wave so they were out of the water.

Liz, yes, facial hair does make a perceptible difference on a cold day. You feel the chill when you trim it.

that's brilliant, what a legend. And in espadrilles too! Love the second, panning shot.

I am not sure that he would appreciate a debate on him on a public forum... he strikes me as a very private individual, he certainly does not engage in any pleasantries on meeting or acknowledge you. So I won't be telling him about CCE!! He has only had this bike about a year, having before a red, 10-speed tourer, and it appeared to be brand new then. Good to know about the efficacy of facial hair as a means of keeping warm, but I won't be benefitting from it any time soon!! He also has a good head of hair.

Riding an Azor priest bike in Edinburgh will make you a subject of comment whether you like it or not.
I get the same thing here but I don't mind.
Number 4 son was at the quack today and the quack told him that I ride past his house every day. I suspect this is more a measure of how many people cycle in North Lanarkshire.
