Edinburgh’s school lollipop men and women are facing fresh uncertainty after the council announced the first review of the service in 20 years.

Cameras will be placed at guided crossings during morning rush-hour this month so the council can monitor traffic and the number of people using each site.

There shouldn't be a need for them at controlled pedestrian crossings. However we now live in an age where a significant number of drivers don't drive responsibly and there is practically no enforcement to stamp such driving out.

Maybe the cameras could also be used to monitor driver behaviour during that time.

Might see some improvement on the current drop-where-you-like, do-your-5-point-turn, rev-off-to-work situation.

    In theory, yes.

    However in practice...

The crossing opposite my children's primary school has a very brief pedestrian phase. I wrote to the council asking them to lengthen it, as not only are school children trying to cross but there's old folk's sheltered housing adjacent too. Apparently that can't be done due to bus priority: the flip side of being on a main bus route.

Also, every day I witness drivers "just nip through" the lights following a column of traffic, who then get stranded at the junction by the red light, either just before the pedestrian crossing, or even straddling it. The majority of these drivers then try to 'sneak' through the second red light when traffic ahead moves off (as the next set of lights change), sometimes regardless of pedestrians trying to cross. It's a ridiculous and potentially dangerous behaviour.

So, lollipop ladies/men definitely required on this crossing!

My assumption as a kid was that the lollipop man at our controlled crossing's main job was to ensure that I only crossed at the green man.

    Probably true.

    Do you mean just you??

Hahaha. No. Although that would be a particularly apt teenage rebellion story for CCE.

When I was wee you only got a lollipop person if there was not a pedestrian crossing. It is frankly ridiculous that we have allowed driving behaviour to get that bad they are a necessity on pedestrian crossings.

From what I can see of a morning their main duty is to prevent the kids walking straight out into moving traffic whilst glued to their phones.
