Roundabout at Aegon staff entrance, car travelling westbound to RBS, cyclist in Ambulance and bike a bit of a mess.

spoke to our security, and according to our security, the cyclist is Aegon staff, so appears to have been crossing the roundabout toward the car park when hit.

  2. Sounded nasty from a colleague I spoke to who saw the rider on the ground. I've had a few eyebrow raising moments at that roundabout. I hope it doesn't lead to a suggestion that cyclists take a different route here... Thoughts with the rider.

Rarely take this roundabout on the bike, unlike the others around the Gyle it actually has a near unobstructed sight lines all round (the others are all raised up and planted heavily).

Still the perennial problems of people refusing to give way right or barrelling round it far too fast. Hurrah for ABS and traction control!

Time wise when was this ?? This is normally my route in from Fife in the morning but its becoming increasingly dangerous but not so much here, more further back at the big roundabout and the intersection of the trams. Its like a race track some mornings, with not an inch given. I`ve had a few hairy moments with speeding cars. I do occasionally use the paths but not great at busy times trying jump over the slips or cross at the lights.

Actually thinking a bit more that roundabout would not be the first time I've had cars overtaking and then cutting across to go into Aegon, a fair few are in hurry to get past to then cut in, a bit annoying as personally, I'm not holding anyone back as I can keep up with traffic. Just to note the buses are normally exemplary in my experience .

  6. I've had a number of close shaves on this roundabout too. Always a scary moment as someone approaches the entry to the roundabout just as I'm about to turn off into the Aegon entrance - quite a few see you but think they can pull out anyway.

I always tell people here that the last few feet before the turn into work is the most dangerous part of my journey each morning.

  7. Just noticed that one of my cycling colleagues isn't in today, and he's not on holiday or working from home according to his calendar.

I'd best go ask those who sit beside him once they're back at their desks after lunch..... Mind you, had it been him I'm sure word would have got around the department before now.

Assuming it's someone from your work, is there any likelihood that 'management' will be willing to do anything to call for changes/improvements to the roundabout?

Is that roundabout, and the roads around, CEC or 'private'.

The guy who was killed by the delivery van around the corner on South Gyle Crescent was a contractor in my office. A crossing was scheduled to be put in last year or before, but has never materialised. I don't think the organisation has ever pushed for any public realm improvements beyond resurfacing Redheughs Avenue.

  10. I'm a contractor, so unfortunately I'm no allowed to approach or ask the management here to do anything.

It's very frustrating, since I'm at as much risk using that roundabout as anyone else who works here, contractor / temp / full-time or otherwise!

  11. "is there any likelihood that 'management' will be willing to do anything to call for changes/improvements to the roundabout?"

More likely we'll be asked to take a different route, or consider dismounting rather than using the roundabout, bearing in mind some recent shenanigans with the entry door to the car park which cyclists must use to the exclusion of all others, but which got locked after a motorbike was stolen, and cyclists were told they had to come in the car entrance bit, creating conflict and, frankly, a dangerous situation.

    Breath not being held.

  12. Found out it wasn't my work colleague - but another cyclist colleague has given me the name of the person injured. It's not someone I know.

    Hope he's OK.

    Completely OT -

    "

Regular cycle use to and from Quorum Business Park has increased from 2% to 6% since 2012

Measures designed to encourage active travel at a business park on the outskirts of Newcastle have resulted in a 20% drop in car use since 2008, a travel survey of businesses has revealed.

Rider has a broken collarbone and a smashed shoulder. Not great.

Re question on improving the roundabout?

It's probably one of the best for sightlines, there are speed bumps before cars access it from that side.

IMO it wasn't design, more driver error.

"IMO it wasn't design, more driver error."

Is the last part of that *speculation*?

Part of the problem with such design (roundabouts generally) is 'traffic flow' - with as little speed reduction as possible.

Most drivers are ok at acknowledging existence and speed of other motor vehicles. Some don't register/understand bikes.

So design not suitable for ActiveTravel (inc pedestrians).

I wonder if speed bumps were always there, or added after previous incidents(?)

    "Speculation"

Absolutely, but pretty much nailed on based on cycling the same way to the same car park, daily !(plus some detail from security)

  18. The speed bumps need to be closer to the roundabout, and better designed to stop drivers being able to cross them without slowing down (by swerving to either side of the lane and lining their wheels up in the gaps).

Most of my near misses have been because they are approaching the roundabout entry at speed and deciding it's easier to just keep going despite the cyclist already being on the roundabout.

The other factor is when they just don't look at all - they're too distracted by searching for their car-park entry pass as they get near work. (A pedestrian was hit and had their leg broken whilst using a marked zebra crossing within company grounds last year because the driver decided that rummaging for his pass in the passenger footwell was more important than looking where he was going).

"The gyle is the area of most concern using the paths more and more which I don't like as not keen on shared use but safer alternative to the car drivers"
