Some parts of Edinburgh may lose normal water supplies or experience low pressure following a mains burst, Scottish Water has said.

The burst has hit a 22-inch water main in Orchardhead Loan in the city’s Liberton area.

The company said supplies in the city centre, Old Town, Canongate, Liberton, Prestonfield, and The Inch could be affected.

No water currently in the Old Town. We had problems with the supply for a couple of days a week or two ago as well.

Aye I thought the water pressure was a bit low this morning. That explains it then!

Yeah, I had a dissatisfying shower this morning, checked twitter afterwards and had the answer immediately. The modern world is actually pretty nifty sometimes!

I cycled through a burst water main up that way last week on an electric bike

also an air block in the upstairts sink last night that I want to blame on this burst main

Question for anyone who understands how the water network works, we live on the third floor and had no water, is there any chance that our neighbours on the ground floor have water and we could fill up a bucket there? We live in old tenements but the cold water tank in the roof has been disconnected and I guess we all have separate connections to the mains.

I rashly offered to facilitate shower use at my work for passing cyclists, only to discover we're affected too....

we used to have a cold water tank in the attic and a hot water tank on the ground floor but now we have mains cold water and I am guessing your tenement is the same if the cold tank has been disconnected. Mains pressure is strong so not sure the downstairs neighbours will have water if you don't?

    Stand pipes next?

In times of reduced pressure it is indeed possible that your ground floor neighbours may have a dribble of a supply. You lose 0.1bar for every metre you ascend. Just depends how major the cut is

    Thanks Klaxon.

Just got home and we now have water restored, albeit at a low pressure. I was in the library earlier and the water was at a low pressure on the ground floor, I was tempted to see if things were worse on the top floor but didn't quite have the motivation.

Was a loss of pressure in Abbeyhill / Meadowbank this morning but somehow we dodged it. It caused the school to be shut.

I noticed last night that pressure was down somewhat, as it took a long time to fill a bucket. I thought for a moment that perhaps Megget had run out.

Brexit has lowered the native water pressure due to a devaluation in the Pascal:pounds per square inch conversion rate.

"It caused the school to be shut."

Certainly did. My two were apparently at home most of the day...
