    Not Edinburgh, but near where my sister lives in North Yorkshire there's a disused railway line which links two towns (Pickering and Malton) together, and a parallel road. The towns are a few miles apart and the land is pretty much flat as a pancake. The road is jam-packed with cars all day, and the disused railway line hasn't been converted to a cycle path, so only a few brave souls cycle on the road. Since one end of this road involves negotiating a big high speed motorway-style roundabout, this is particularly dodgy.

    One poor guy had a nasty accident there and his wife has started this petition to at least have some sort of cycle lanes added to the roundabout. Could you please help out by signing it? (I know a cycle lane is not ideal, but it would be better than absolutely nothing, and a show of support here would be important, I'd say. It might get a cycle campaign off the ground, for instance.)

    Thanks!

    I've been marvelling for years now about the utter crapness of the cycling infrastructure in Pickering and Malton and thereabouts. It just doesn't seem to exist - in a place which otherwise seems almost made for cycling.

    I used to go to Flamborough Head very regularly, (Note the good remake of Dad's Army filmed there) and saw signs to Pickering all the time. Not sure ever went though remember going up on the moors above Whitby to the Steam Train. Not the best bit of God's Own County for cycling for sure.

    @gembo

    Your comment is two above mine. I have used a false name and claimed to be local which is mendacious and manipulative?

    @gembo - yep it seems that if you visit the site while signed into Facebook, it will pillage your public data (profile photo, name etc) and store that indefinitely. My profile photo that appears is a very old one, which goes to show change.org are storing it on their own server

    Absolutely. The steam train runs north from Pickering towards Whitby, and is much in vogue with steam enthusiasts, Heartbeat fans and (oddly) World War Two fetishists. The disused line I mentioned is its continuation south from Pickering to Malton, where it used to join the line to York and Leeds. The North York Moors national park north of Pickering is very hilly. It does seem popular for cycling though, even so - Pickering is a big tourist centre, and lots of families seem to bring a whole heap of bicycles with them by car, drive them all to one of the off-road forest tracks in the national park, and cycle there in relative peace.

    Here's a map of the area and a streetview of the roundabout in question, where the A169 crosses the A64 dual carriageway. It looks (and feels, when you're there) like it was designed to be efficiently zoomed round at top speed.
