    Hi all,

Apologies for the off topic post, crisis in the Utrechtcyclist household at the moment... Recently Aspa got addicted to the American breakfast cereal Grape Nuts (I'd not heard of them either but apparently they are very old, and partially responsible for the marketing campaign masquerading as a public health announcement of breakfast being the most important meal of the day). Anyway, the local Tesco have stopped selling them, does anyone know of any other places that stock them?

    Thanks!

Amazon has it. You might try Lupe Pintos too? They do a lot of American imports. Usually not 'healthy' stuff though.

    "got addicted"

    Could be an expensive habit...

have you tried the tesco out on the airport rd? that's where we always went when we want something our tesco didn't stock anymore.

Try the Tesco @ Hermiston Gait - that one has the biggest range of US products I know of. It's in about the second to last aisle (not quite as far from the door as possible), towards the front wall of the store.

I think I tried them once, quite hard and nearly broke a tooth. You cannae whack porridge with Greek yoghurt and honey when breakfasting like a king, lunching like a Lord and having grape nuts with the paupers for your tea,

Neither grapes nor nuts, same as peanuts, neither peas (technically) not nuts

@srd do you mean the two storey Tesco at corstorphine? That is a big shop

Thanks @SRD, Tesco online and Amazon both have it, but we don't really want to wait home all day for the delivery and were hoping to avoid having ten boxes delivered to the office... I think there are more expensive addictions @chdot, buying bikes for example.

Didn't know about Lupe Pintos but we'll check it out, otherwise the airport road Tesco could be a good bet. If only there was a decent segregated cycle path to that part of town...

And thanks for the tips about Hermiston Gait and Costorphine, and the more general musings on breakfast from @gembo.

Could turn this into a tour of out of town supermarkets and famous places from the CCE forum that I've never been to ('Edinburgh's most polluted road', scary aqueduct, maybe even get to meet purple helmet lady).

If heading on canal towpath to hermiston gait then going down the hill as it flattens out there is a cut through for pedestrians and cyclists takes you to the tesco' store. Saves you going down to bottom and all the way round. Nearby attractions include decathlon, tk maxx and the tram stop. You can go back via stenhouse path and pop into beer factory for a Paolozzi

The Tesco Metro at Holy Corner has a small US section, not exactly packed with goodness - I can feel my teeth rotting just by looking at it!

Herniston gait is definitely a nicer cycle (or tram) than costorphine. Decathlon is nearly as bad as IKEA, but without the meatballs to redeem things at the end.

Never got into Grapenuts as cereal, but quite enjoy Grapenuts icecream once in a while. Surprisingly popular in the US, and sometimes found in Canada.

Disappointed that there are neither grapes nor nuts in Grapenuts.

  13. Rather bizarrely the Esso garage on Willowbrae Road has a little US section. Can't think of having seen Grape Nuts, but then I wouldn't have been looking for them. They've got things like Twinkies and Goobers though (American food is so oddly descriptive in its naming...)

Now I think of it, there's a reasonable-sized section of American produce in the Duke Street Tesco. I didn't realise there was a big American ex-pat enclave down that way.

Whilst everyone is away looking in distant supermarkets could they please keep an eye out for ginger oatcakes? I found some a couple of weeks ago but only had space for a couple of packets and now can't remember where they were.

    @wingpig

When I am dictator there will be oatcake purity laws similar to the German Reinheitsgebot mandating pinhead oatmeal, lard, baking powder ,salt and peat-tinged Scottish water as the only allowed ingredients.

Ginger. I ask you. What next? Chocolate?

It's not for me. The largest child has taken a liking to them for his snack. He'll also eat plain oatcakes with nothing on when required.

Why, when hearing thed term "Grape Nuts", do I think of hemorrhoids?

    Posted 8 years ago #
  20. @coxy they make me think of that and also of Dr David Bellamy (or Lenny Henry's impression of him): "Gwapple me Gwape Nuts!"

    Thanks!

I also managed to find some last night, I decided to call the customer service desk at Sainsbury's Cameron Toll and they said they had them so I rode down there. Lovely cycle ride until the last 100m, not sure how shopping centres get away with having such poor access for cyclists...

To be honest, I've never thought Cameron Toll was bad for cycle access. You can cycle basically right up to the bike racks which are 20m from the doors. Never had a problem getting a free bike rack and never felt unsafe cycling through the car park.

maybe depends which way you arrive? From Blackford or the A701 it's quite inconvenient/hostile to try to get into the car park with a bike. from the A7 it's fine.

"Never had a problem getting a free bike rack and never felt unsafe cycling through the car park. "

It's only reliably safe to approach it if you're on the footway or go in through the back way by the burn.
I followed someone into the car park the other week when they made me feel unsafe on Lady Road.
I usually approach from Esslemont (where the light at the bottom is always red but when I'm always aggressively passed by numpties desperate to try and hit 40mph on their way downhill) or Craigmillar Park (bus lane SIDE ROAD bus lane SIDE ROAD bus lane SIDE ROAD bus la.. oh...) or Old Dalkeith Road (bus lane PARKED THING bus lane SIDE ROAD bus lane CRATERS bus.. oh...) or Peffermill Road (where no amount of primary through pinch points dissuades some morons from trying to get past and where you sometimes get to play Adventures in Ignoring Lane Markings with large heavy things).

Not a fan of the roundabout on Lady Road, but I wasn't going to hold that against the shopping centre.

Perhaps I'm particularly roundabout averse, since a roundabout is the only place I've ever been hit by a car, but I didn't fancy taking either the big roundabout at the bottom of Dalkeith road or the roundabout on Lady road. Things are also scarier when you don't know where you're going.

I cycled down the A7 to get there, which I thought was quite okay, and then got off to push my bike around the roundabout at the bottom (I think that was five times I had to wait for a green man).

On the way back I went via Lady road and the A701, didn't fancy the lady road roundabout, certainly didn't fancy getting in to the right hand lane on the bit going uphill, so again crossed on foot with the traffic lights. The A701 was also surprisingly nice to cycle on. Much as I like repeating the mantra 'bus lanes are not cycle infrastructure', they certainly make me a lot happier on a busy road.

Maybe none of this is the fault of Cameron Toll, but it would have been nice to a toucan across Lady road giving good access to the A701.

When I was hunting for grape nuts I called various supermarkets on the phone, it was surprisingly quick and effective. Possibly less so at this time of year.

Have never heard of fruity HP sauce but it sounds intriguing...

Thanks UC. We have various shopping errands still to do, so it's not too inconvenient to check them out. just thought I'd see if CCE had any clever ideas.

Fruity HP's not bad, but to my mind it's also a bit sweeter and milder than regular HP.
