Car rack

Aye, wondering if a car rack is a better idea than shoving my bike in the back seat of the car, and inevitably clarting the seats with oil.

Not something I'll need to use very often, so don't want to spend too much money. If I'm buying one though, it'd be good if it could fit my wife's bike on it too (which is a step-through, if it makes a difference).

Can anyone recommend anything, or warn what to steer clear of?

EDIT: For a Golf - if that makes a difference too.

@Frenchy: I've got one sitting in my shed that you're welcome to have. It's one of the ones that straps onto the back of a hatchback, so should fit your Golf. Can take two bikes - to get a step-through on it you'll need one of the false-toptube things.

I tried to flog it here previously but had no takers, so it was eventually going to go to the Bike Station. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I've also got a rack, which is towball mounted, and I'm happy to loan it to folk as necessary. Up to three bikes, any size, but you'll need a towball, 7 pin electrics (or an adapter) and a numberplate (which you may have for towing anyway...).

I have a Revolution three-slot hatchback-back thing, which accepts a top-tube-less Ridgeback if it's turned upside-down. It was cheap, but has lasted more than ten years so far and has never fallen off.

The strap-on things have a reputation for shedding bikes on the road every now and then. I only know of one such incident in the real world so don't know how justified that is.

I went the full hog - Thule roof carrier. Brilliant, but pricey.

Having failed to find a roof rack to get our Helios Tandem on the rood, we bought a Saris Bones rear rack and successfully took it down to France and back.

Main disadvantage of the boot mount, is that access is restricted once the rack is on. I also noted that for our hatchback, Saris say to use Hatch Huggers rather than the supplied hooks, none of the local suppliers actually had the Huggers in stock but Halfords would have been quite happy to install with the hooks. (We bought online in the end)

@chrisfl - I've a tandem roof rack which is likely to fit the Helios. I'd say definitely, but the adjustment has seized, so it's fixed at Pino widths!

Happy to loan if you tire of the boot mount.
