    Interesting behavioural change from the Netherlands;

    It wouldn't work here because no one pays any attention whatsoever to anything they learn while 'learning' to drive, but it's a nice hack for a more grown-up country.

    I saw this article too. Really interesting and simple technique I knew nothing about - will try to start doing it myself and getting those riding in cars with me to do the same.

    I just did this in place at my desk and I'm amazed how effective it is at bringing the body round.

    How often do driving instructors get re-trained and reassessed? Making it a part of the test would mean it gets drilled during lessons - "You'd be an idiot to fail by opening the door the wrong way!"

    Then the PR campaign that would go with the change teaches everyone else too...

    I'm initially surprised that this isn't what everyone does instinctively. I would never open a house door by standing at the handle and facing the hinge while trying to open it with the hand nearest the handle. People would think I was an idiot who had basic problems with doors.

    But frankly if anyone thinks that this cute trick will mean fewer people are doored when the threat of being hit by passing traffic has yet to hammer home the message then I believe you live in a fantasy world.
