Am I reading this right? Are they planning on making the island on the South Gyle Access Road 45cm wider by reducing the carriage way? Wouldn't it be cheaper to just move the barriers out to the kerb?

I notice the traffic signal cabinets that block the cycleway at the South Gyle Access junction aren't even shown on the map (neither existing, nor proposed).

Ooops. They're on the second dwg.

AECOM need some new talent that can see beyond throwing up shared use signs and calling it infrastructure

Burning up the budget by tinkering around the edges.

It seems weird that I wouldn't know this despite having it as one of my commute options, but... is the crossing of Balgreen road not for bikes already? I (and everyone I see) am/is using it for that.

I assumed the talk of a crossing upgrade would be out nearer Screwfix where there are a couple of right dogs (I jump onto the road for half a mile to avoid them).

Edit: Bankhill Avenue and Broomhouse Road are the ones I am talking about above (where I ride on the road to avoid the crossings)

Its technically a pedestrian crossing but I for one ignore that and I'm quite sure I'm not alone.

LOL. Only in Edinburgh would we build a massive segregated cycle facility then forget the crossing at the end.

I don't think I've seen anyone dismount for the Balgreen Crossing. There is a nicely ambiguous sign on Baird Drive saying "Cyclists use crossing".

The Roseburn Park segregation seems a waste of time and money given the state the park is in just now and potential plans which will involve the rugby team building a pavilion/a cafe opening in the old toilet block/the block being demolished.

  10. They're finally moving the telecoms cabinets out of the centre of the cycle side of the shared path at South Gyle Access! It's a bleedin' miracle!

Sadly, I don't think much of the rest of 'improvements' around the 2-stage crossing with the central islands. A proper improvement would be the creation of a cycling 'flyover' of the road there.

So "official" CCE response: "Yawn, more of the same". "Please stop wasting the money we fought hard to secure"

Of course not so many 'fast commuters' would go through Roseburn Park if there was a segregated cycle lane along the A8 - even just as far as Riversdale Crescent.

Might have to start on Roseburn Terrace...

Bankhead Drive, Bankhead Avenue and South Gyle Access

    Changes to be included:
 We shall consider a continuous footway at Makro.
 Additional signage and ground markings shall be added along all new sections of shared
    use pavement.
 The new proposed crossing, at the entrance to Forrester High School, shall be a toucan
    crossing.
 A decluttering assessment of existing street furniture shall be undertaken.

    Balgreen Road
    Changes to be included:
 We shall change the design to bring the pavement entry/exit point on Baird Drive further
east, away from the junction. This will make it safer and easier for cyclists to join the
crossing from Baird Drive and rejoin the road (Baird Drive) from the pavement.
 We shall include dropped kerbs and shared use re-determination along the widened
section of pavement between Saughton Hall Drive and the crossing of Balgreen Road.
This shall provide the access that you have highlighted.

    Roseburn Park
    Changes to be included:
There are no changes that shall be made to the current proposals. However, this is a 3 month trial and
we shall evaluate its effectiveness and reopen the consultation for further feedback before proposing a
    permanent solution.

Does any or all of that represent and satisfy the views of anyone on here who commented?

The consultation appears to have been updated, but now only contains the upgrade of the Balgreen crossing to Toucan

    https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/cycle-walk-design-balgreen-rd-fd/consult_view/

For reference, the original consultation is here: https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/design-cycle-walk-balgreen-road/

The earlier consultation dealt with many issues from the riverside, across Balgreen Road, Whitson Road and finishing on Stenhouse Drive near the point it meets the tram line.

The statutory notices for making the crossing at Balgreen a toucan have been stuck to the poles there.

Received a survey asking for views on the layout in Roseburn Park. I responded to say that I didn't think it was working (it encourages people to cycle faster past the buildings as they may assume no one is walking on the bike side, and that the tactiles were rubbish and I always try to avoid the ones on the bike side). Also said that if they want to get fast cyclists (mostly commuters) out of the park then build a safe lane on the A8.

@Stickman - I have the impression of people going too fast past the buildings as well. I hate tactiles anywhere but I think they are statutory on shared paths eg the tramway from Balgreen. I would certainly agree about getting the commuters out & can see that being a logical development after the CCWEL is built, though of course the "Community" would hate it. Certainly there's conflict in the Park, which should be for gentle leisure cycling, not commuting. Would you have any suggestions about the layout, other than knocking down those buildings?

My problem with moving the commuters (me) out of the park onto the A8 even after the CCWEL is one of the wider network. I use the park to get to the access of the shared use path by the tramline via Balgreen Road. Even if I used the A8 post CCWEL I'd still have to get down the way to my destination (Saughton House).

I do try to go at a reasonably slow speed through the park if there are other users, and take care weaving through the building. Are the buildings actually used for anything? Maybe they could be removed to improve sightlines and reduce visual clutter for everyone.

The safe lane along the A8 "only" has to get as far as Riversdale Cres to bypass the park, even if heading on to the Balgreen path, no?

@paulmilne - one of the buildings is used by the cricket clubs.

Friends of Roseburn Park want to turn the smallest one into a cafe. If that happens then something will have to be done about a cycle route - maybe take part of the grassed area?

Have the council given up on the toucan crossing at Balgreen Road? Seems like a relatively small change and yet two years later...

Work has started on upgrading the Balgreen crossing to a toucan. Expected to finish 19th July.

Going by there every work day I can testify that the current crossing is pretty much used as a toucan without exception, so not sure what actual difference this will make, apart from legitimising customary behaviour.

@Paulmilne, I think legitimising customary behaviour justifies it. There is always a risk from a disgruntled driver who was annoyed by a cyclist using the pedestrian crossing.
