It's a great pity but I can't say I'm surprised. Writing on the wall for some time. If Creative Scotland want it to stay, should stump up.

Interesting comments on twitter suggesting Botanics want to convert the house in to a commercial event space (weddings etc).

Has been the residence of the head honcho of the botanics then the Scottish gallery of modern art.

Is it not possible for it to be an exhibition space and a wedding venue? The city chambers manages to be a council HQ and a wedding venue

Wedding parties will want their venue to themselves. Most weddings are at the weekend and venues can charge more at the weekend. An art gallery will get more visitors at the weekend. Art galleries will want to put sculptures on the floors as well as stuff on the walls, while weddings want as much floor space as possible.

    So a bit incompatible.
I've no idea how much space there is at Inverlieth House.

As it happens, we went to look at Jupiter Artland as a potential wedding venue yesterday - you can get married there at any time of the year, but after they close to the public at the end of September you get access to things like the space where the cafe is that you wouldn't be able to use over the summer.

Popped in to Inverleith House yesterday afternoon and there were hundreds of people around.

Having been a regular visitor for most of my life it's very sad to think that it might be gone, but there seemed to be a feeling that it will continue in some way. Of course the usual cynics who know the price of everything but the value of nothing start shouting about 'arty farty' whingers but ho hum.

Good piece on the Guardian site about it (and the wider issues facing arts organisations):

I believe there was an appeal on twitter yesterday for people to descend en masse on Inverleith House at 3.30pm as a protest against the gallery's closure. I only heard about it at 4.30pm.

The Botanics is one of my favourite places, but I almost never visit Inverleith House. I'm not alone in this - Inverleith House had 20,756 visitors in 2014/15 (less than 60 a day), while the Gardens had 845,889 (roughly 2350 a day).

If cash is tight, particularly with Creative Scotland pulling funding for Inverleith House, then it's hard to argue with focusing on their role as a botanic garden and generating revenue from their assets.

@fimm good marquees at Jupiter too. You can cylcle out the canal and down through the hamlet (cars can'); though you would obviously need to organise that they will let you in that way. There is a ballroom with skulls in the cornice that is a must see.

However the gallery could yet win a reprieve after senior Botanics officials agreed to the creation of a taskforce with its main funders, the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland, to look at the future of Inverleith House.

In a marked change of tone from previous comments, Simon Milne, regius keeper of the garden, said: "The intention is not for Inverleith House to lie empty and there was never any intention to ‘close’ the building. The decision taken by the board was that Inverleith House would no longer be dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art.

“We are looking at the options for a number of exhibitions and events across the board – for next year and beyond. There will be potential for hiring the space – but only around our exhibitions and events programme at Inverleith House. We remain committed to being an arts venue.”
