I was giving the tourer (Reynolds steel) a well deserved wash at the weekend when I noticed a couple of places where the paint has chipped or rubbed to expose some bare metal.

My question to the panel - particularly the cape wearers with thermos brackets on their rides - is how would they recommend that I treat these areas? My gut and ill-informed feeling is that I'd want to put a coating of some sort over them (I'm not so bothered about appearances - every scratch tells a tale - and I'd be happy to clear coat it). However, would I want to treat the exposed metal in any way first before I "seal in" any minor corrosion that may already have started?

Generally rust is the action of water and oxygen on iron/steel so as long as these are seal out, should be fine.

Sandpaper off the rust - mostly for cosmetic reasons.

I like the idea of clear coating though I have never done it. Various bits of various frames are coated with smooth Hammerite.

although it would be harder to tell when it gets chipped off again...

Smooth hammerite's the one as it treats the rust as well or humbrol enamel paint coz you might be able to get a good colour match.clean up as much of the rust as you can I've got a some wee wire brush atachments for my drill and they do the job very well.
