"...Mr Grailing said putting it [the new Heathrow runway] on a ramp over the M25 would be cheaper than putting the new runway IN A TUNNELL UNDER THE M25....."

My mind is boggling at how wide this runway tunnel would have to be to accomodate jumbo jets... never mind how they would land IN THE TUNNELL if the wind was eastery!!

Listen from 15 minutes and 55 seconds.

Comical indeed. They should clearly just use the M25 as part of the runway where the two cross. Remove the central reservation, put in traffic lights and off we go.

Couldn't we just land the planes in Roseburn and use HS2 to get folk down to that London?

I believe the original plan was to put the M25 in a tunnel under the runway rather than the other way round. Still nuts though.

I don't know what Grayling actually said, but the idea was to put the M25 in a tunnel under the runway. Edit: didn't see previous post before I posted.

Tunnel or ramp, they're both mad. I can't see why, if big airports are thought necessary, that they couldn't build it in the English Midlands where it might actually be welcomed, with fast rail links to the London, and other north of England cities.
