@neddie: that’s what struck me about the response to the Corstorphine traffic counts: people getting get up about a change of maybe a dozen cars an hour on some streets but completely ignoring the 20k vehicles passing along St John’s Road every day.

Somebody, somewhere is making decisions on your behalf. Democracy Matters conversations have already started to explore whether far more of these decisions could be made by communities themselves. This is a key and connected part of the wider Local Governance Review which is looking across all of Scotland’s vital public services to consider how power and resources should be shared between national and local government.

This consultation provides another opportunity for as many voices as possible to be heard to help shape future local democratic systems and processes.

(P.s. I’m told “It is a consultation of sorts but it's being touted more as a national conversation.” Not sure if that’s better or worse…)

They could start by allowing local councils to do things they've been elected to do like put in bike lanes, tourist taxes and parking levies without having to beg the government for five years first.

Yet again, people are trying to game traffic consultations, this time by pretending to be Welsh.

In Oxford, ppn 200k, we had 1.1m responses to a “do you like the LTNs” survey. This is why I think all councils should do representative polling, not gameable online consultations.

Or just treat and report on them as consultations, not polls. Valid responses are things like "there's actually a tree in the way there so this won't work" or "it would be nice if this linked in with my route to school." "I agree" and "I disagree" are not really relevant.

Any strategic, joined up AT approach in this city cannot possibly emerge from individual, ad-hoc, street-by-street community consultation. How could it?

Consultation is no replacement for genuine leadership, democratically mandated & evidence-based policy & technical expertise

Green councillors did not support separating out the scheme for additional consultation because this option costs the Council money, increases the workload of council officers who are already stretched and puts more work on residents to respond to additional consultations about the same subject which can be frustrating and confusing. Instead, we suggested to continue the “standard” process for the scheme which would have seen a “tweaked” route readvertised for comment now, based on feedback already submitted.

Not Edinburgh and not quite the sort of consultation ’we’ are used to -

‘Community consultation’ and ‘co-create’ are becoming increasingly popular, but they’re just buzzwords. They just stick some poor people in a room, get someone to facilitate it, then forget about them later.

We want to hear what you think about our next phase of the George Street and First New Town project and the design of the cross streets of North Castle Street, Frederick Street and Hanover Street (North)

Just putting this out there - the plans for Hanover Street (north) look very much like Leith Walk, including twisty cycle lanes.

And dumping bikes at each end into a multi-lane* advanced-stop-line full of trucks and angry motors...

*Because must prioritise FLOW. It's the FLOW FLOW FLOW. Shows you the car-brain mindset of the designers hasn't changed from, "cars first, squeeze everything else to the sides"

    including twisty cycle lanes.

They're not nearly as twisty as Leith Walk.

The Hanover St cycleways "move" by about one third to one half of the width of the cycle lane (by my rough eyeballing). On Leith Walk, though, some of the twists involve the cycle lane "moving" by more than its full width (here, for example).

Maybe we don't want them to twist at all, of course.

@Frenchy - true, but I remember that the plans for the Leith Walk lanes included far fewer/shallower twists than ended up being the case.

There is no need for angled twists in any cycle lane. Lanes I have used elsewhere have swooping curves where required, e.g. bus stop bypasses, which are far better suited to how bikes travel than the Leith Walk nonsense.

A workplace parking levy in Edinburgh would mean employers are charged for car parking spaces in workplaces, based on their use. The money raised can then be used to fund local transport improvements. What do you think? Share your views in our survey

I was in a meeting yesterday where it was decided to have a survey about people’s attitudes to surveys

we had a survey at work that a lot of people didn't answer. I want to know why. not sure I can convince them to survey the survey non-completers. but their data would be much more interesting than the data from those who did complete it.

You could have a battle of the methods and organise a focus group to understand why some people choose not to complete surveys.

Well that was one of the original points of focus groups to help establish surveys that would appeal to people to fill them in. But there seems to be a certain amount of fatigue.

    @morningsider - surely that's been done?

my problem is that I want to know why precisely these people did not complete this survey in particular.

will tell you about it over coffee sometime

Kinghorn to Kirkcaldy Active Travel Route We want to hear your views on new proposed walking, wheeling, and cycling routes from Kinghorn to Kirkcaldy.

SEStran (The South East of Scotland Transport Partnership) are running a consultation to find out about both the barriers and the opportunities available in these areas.

They would like to know what active travel improvements you want to see.
