If you've got an Alfine hub gear on a bike of yours, and you ever wondered how they work, here's the explanation.

Having seen this, I am totally in awe of the Shimano engineers who designed it...

...although I must confess still being slightly bamboozled by how it actually works.

One of the mechanics at Bikefix in London once disassembled a Rohloff hub gear to its component parts. Apparently it took him three weeks to put it back together.

    Pretty amazing piece of tech.

Think I'll need to watch that video about 20 times before I've got it all though.

I'll add the Rholoff link, as it is extraordinary too.

It may be apocryphal, but I read that Robert Stevenson, before building the Rocket, got friends to go in a cart and advance it by turning the wheels, just to be absolutely certain that a driven wheel would advance a train.

I'm at that stage with hub gears. Read the manual, watched the video, seen the insides, but still can't quite shake off the niggling suspicion that voodoo is involved somewhere.

    Loved the guy's accent. Aboot!

Fascinating and bamboozling in equal measures. Thanks for sharing.

I don't have anything that flash but with the SA hubs you just hit them with a hammer till they unscrew and then have a look inside.

You don't need to be Wernher von Braun to to it, just methodical.
