@amir? Smoother than any West Lothian Road, also good sightlines and straight. But on the other hand, I really like it so maybe overlook its foibles?

OK, so it's not 50mph, but I reached 41mph this morning going west along the A8 towards Ratho Station.

That's impressive! It's pretty flat along there so even with a tailwind that's good going.

Yes. I did the same run on Saturday with the recumbent race bike and was about 7mph slower.

according to Strava (so it 'must' be right, although I'm not sure I believe it), I briefly touched 79.2km/h, which is 49.2mph, yesterday as part of the mtb C2C.

Somewhere on the tarmac about 5km after Tarfside. I recall it was fast, just not that fast. However I'm taking it as technology is infallible as we all know.

what is the record speed for a mountain bike and is Guy Martin the holder of the record or is it Iain McR?

Iain McR nice. I've had the opposite. Descending the Devil's Elbow in an aero tuck on a road bike with a tailwind I didn't touch the brakes until the lorry park. Maximum speed according to Strava 60kph.

Did 45.6 mph on our new Nazca Quetzal tandem on Sunday. Slower uphills with mixed ability crew but from this statistical sample of 1 it would appear to be an absolute monster descender - I had to put the brakes on to stay behind a car. Could easily have broken 50 on a hill in which I tend to top out around 47/48 on the Fuego. Was waiting for a row from the wife for going so fast but we ended up talking about the possibility of getting a Schlumpf speed drive - quality!

  10. I know he's pro, but this is pretty impressive:

At 128.5km/h max, he wasn't even the fastest on the day

'Strava says' max speed of 88.6kpm, so 55mph.

On the hill down to the A1 past Carberry / Whitecraig on Sunday morning.

I was totally exhausted, which always makes my descents faster as I can't be bothered braking. Had a front puncture about 5 mins later as we entered Musselburgh.

Not sure I believe it was that fast, but since when is technology fallible.

    let the record show etc...

It is pretty easy to tell if it is an anomaly on Strava, you just look on the speed trace on the analysis & a one off spike is a bit of a giveaway.

On that hill, I am pretty sure you had to make quite an effort to get to that speed (or tailee). I never like the bottom bit - bumpy.

Set a new personal record of 46.5mph coming down Carmichael Hill - here

Pretty sure I'd have reached 50mph, but for having to apply the brakes about halfway down as there was a car coming the other way.

So spare a thought for Russell Bridge, a 41-year-old amateur cyclist and father of twins who will this week lead a British challenge to break the world record for the fastest speed achieved on a “human-powered vehicle” (HPV), which stands at a white knuckle-inducing 89.6mph (144kph).

Russell might be in Nevada but last I heard, The Soup Dragon was in Ohio, with USAnian Customs being awkward. We're all hoping that the mean green machine will turn up by Tuesday.

Ken, another handcyclist who lives in Edinburgh, is also currently out at Battle Mountain Nevada taking part in the IHPVA land speed record attempt for handcycles with a team from the University of Liverpool.
He's got to beat the current record of 45.68mph.

The team are also going for the women's record with Karen Darke from Inverness using the same handcycle which is a much more achievable 24.85mph.

    Their first rides are today!

    Thanks!

This is of course getting lots of media coverage in UK??

I'm not aware of any media coverage, Ken's latest WhatsApp message tells me that his first run was 42.37mph which is already a UK record and Karen reached 39.11mph with an illegal wind so I'm sure she'll officially set a record speed soon.

Good to see records and potential records for handcyclists. I mean 42.37 mph is faster than most people can manage on two wheeled anythings downhill never mind the level! (yeah... I know they are all super aero modified but if you've ever had a go on a handcycle you'll know what an achievemnt that is...!)

Last week @nobrakes was out with his M5 CHR and got up to 51.9mph following a 'traditional' bike.
