Paul Lawrence, the council’s executive director of place, wrote: “I am writing to offer my sincere apologies for the lack of notice given to you regarding the removal of the Christmas lighting column motifs.

“There has clearly been a breakdown in communication between officers within the council.

“Unfortunately the stock of lights and other decorations has suffered damage due to
weather, vandalism and general wear and tear and we were unable to meet the replacement costs within the very constrained revenue budget.

“This decision was made by council officers and is my responsibility. No elected councillors were involved in the decision-making process.

“We are working to ensure that this breakdown in communication does not occur in future.”

Call me Scrooge but I think it's fair enough. If local areas want Xmas lights, they can always fundraise for them. Can we save some cash by not subsidising the Hogmanay street party too?

  3. Not much time to fundraise when you are informed on Dec 1st your baubles are broken...

Raises the question of whether every single (relatively naff) bit of lamppost adornment is actually 'dead' with no chance of cannibalisation.

Whether it's all now landfill might be another question.

I remember many years ago going to some council depot on Bonnington Road and being surprised to see large Christmas decorations (think they were the ones that, then, were used in George Street) just hanging from the roof beams.

    Most sensible really!

There's a useful thing to turn Community Council's attention to, away from ranting about bl**dy cyclists. Go fundraise for your Christmas lights. Or get local businesses on board (like the ones in Porty, good on them).

Maybe we could donate one of these to Murrayfield CC :D

I've always thought that street light manufacturers should offer an integrated pop-out Christmas light version.
