A report prepared for Perth and Kinross Council said it would pave the way for thousands of new jobs and relieve traffic congestion.
The route has two-thirds of its funding in place, with the £35m shortfall part of a bid to the Tay Cities Deal.
"
Or -
Encourage more traffic and create congestion somewhere new.
(Probably in addition to wherever it is now.)

Aye I know. Essentially this is just extending the Perth bypass to the north east for traffic heading to Angus from points further afield. Traffic is surely not that bad between Perth and Angus?
Anyway from a cycling perspective when they build this it will ruin some of the quieter roads north of Scone, unless they plan grade separated junctions, which I very much doubt.

5359 new jobs (roughly the same amount as employed by the Scottish Government)? How do they get away with making these claims? We should start doing this for cycling infrastructure - make up spurious job creation figures and then criticise anyone who opposes the scheme as being anti-business.

Rellies of ours used to live near the Dundee Rd / A85. It could be a little slow moving Northbound at times, but it was never really that bad.
Most of the traffic was queuing waiting to turn left to cross the bridge into Perth, since this is the main route into the East/North of the town (from the South). Hardly any traffic continued straight on to the A93 / A94.
Total nonsense that they need some kind of 'relief' road here.

"The report said that every £1 of capital invested in the Cross Tay Link Road would generate an estimated £4.30 of revenue and could lead to £966m of private sector investment via new housing and employment."
Every £1 invested could lead to £966m of private sector investment??? Wow!

Probably the same way they get away with claims of 123 miles of off-road routes in Edinburgh - by adding up every single little job that was created ever, over the course of 20 years, even if that job was only a zero-hours contract, only lasting a day.

I wonder how long it will be before they are extending this Cross Tay Link Road south to the A90 to "complete" the loop of bypasses around Perth?
I'm imagining a tunnel under Kinnoull Hill, with the tunnel exiting the cliffs, somewhere around here, then one of those fabby bridges connecting the tunnel mouth down to the A90.
No expense spared when it comes to roads, eh, so why not?

That is exactly what we should do. Except they don't need to be spurious. There are perfectly serious balance of payments and job creation arguments for cycling.

Taking a starting point of a cyclist every 3 seconds on the new lane that give increased capacity of around 1,200 people an hour in both directions. Combined with a 2 hour period when most people arrive and leave at work gives 4,800 jobs created as a result of the Roseburn to Town cycle path. My fag packet doesn't have space to look at the Leith end of the cycle path.

I watched the endlessly revolving promo video with happy music and cars going assorted roundabouts. Spotted a bus and a train (tick). Cycleway was invisible although the route in to Perth beside the A9 is actually worth improving I would say. Currently goes beside Tay on final approach with some muddy narrow bits under A9 bridge and railway in/out of Perth. Traffic free virtually till Luncarty.
Although I have cycled beside the A9 on cycleway towards Luncarty and on to Ballathie I was non the wiser. All mood music for a happy motoring future :-(
The report said that every £1 of capital invested in the Cross Tay Link Road would generate an estimated £4.30 of revenue. Not possible - fantasy economics. This will be the same Perth where 'connecting' trains are kept well apart in a very empty station. My wife often gets the 6.30am from Edinburgh to connect with the earliest train to Inverness. She often has to lug stuff around 8am in Perth.
Of course rapid direct trains from Edinburgh to Inverness must be part of the new faster ScotRail. 'Classic' HST trains will be going direct by 2020? Can't wait to get chance to slam a train door again but maybe they will update this aspect.Posted 8 years ago # -
but maybe they will update this aspect.
I think slam doors are getting phased out - pretty sure I read somewhere that the Abellio HSTs will be getting new doors as part of their refurb before going into service.

The DfT's "Value for Money" guidance says a project will generally be regarded as "medium" if the BCR is between 1.5 and 2; and "high" if it is above 2. In transport terms, 35 to 1 is most definitely "off the scale".
To put this into perspective, the Eddington transport study of 2006 said the BCR for trunk roads was 4.66, local roads 4.23 and light rail schemes a measly 2.14. The UK's £43bn HS2 rail project has a BCR of just 2.3.

Contrast and compare.
A bridge was proposed before, very close to this location but the plans were thrown out after the estimated costs rose above £6 million.
Not for cars of course.
