By February we'll have clawed back a whole 4 minutes!

I prefer this one. Gives the moonrise and moonset too.

@ dougal
Actually last number is compared to previous day not running total.

By mid February we'll have more than 1.5 hours extra daylight!

The sunset's been getting later for a week already now, sadly we'll have to wait almost another week for lighter mornings to begin.
Today seems like an ideal reminder that the meteorological can be more powerful than astronomical. I'm predicting the lowest percentage output ever from Edinburgh's solar array's today.

Light has such an effect on us that I think it's important to mark the solstice (even if we do it a few days later to keep the non-pagans happy). I also like the Chinese idea of having new year in February, the end of which dread month often feels like a turning point where winter loses its venom even when it's still snowing in April.

Perhaps we should all arrange our bikes in a ring and sacrifice a car.
The clocks changing in March is the biggest turning point for me, marking the point where lights will only occasionally appear on my bike until the Autumn.

How about sacrificing a street's car access each year? Starting with George Street.

If I have got this right then today marks the end of darker evenings. Every sunset from now until June will be later than the previous one.
Sadly sunrises will also continue getting later for another few weeks.

I'm more than ready to do whatever necessary to bring back the sun goddess from the underworld. Also needed: some spare fresh blood, white berries, holly logs, matches and and a nice sharp flint knife.

The sun will return when the horse is good and ready.

I saw that in the Nationalmuseet in Copenhagen when I was about 14. It's a totally amazing thing. (Saw it again at this fantastic exhibition which I managed to squeeze in on a work trip.)
(?14? Maybe 12? It was a wee while ago...)

It has always seemed more plausible to me than that whirly Copernican model.

@unhurt I also saw it! Just last year though. I regret not getting to ride a bicycle in Copenhagen but it rained hard and relentlessly so hiding in museums was worthwhile.

They have some pretty amazing museums. Would love to go back as a grown up!

@acsimpson, not quite. Sunset will be at the same time for quite a few days, but the mornings will get fractionally darker each day until the solstice. To be exact, the sunset has been at the same time (15:38) since 9th December* and will stay the same until 20th December, when it will be one minute later. Sunrise has been one minute later every day since 7th December, and will continue at this rate until 18th December, when the darkening will slow and then eventually sunrises start getting very slightly earlier on 30th December.
* - Not counting seconds here, which for real precision would be I have to acknowledge that.

Oh come on. WE must know the answer to the nearest second these days, surely?

neddie, don't worry we do (Or at least I do) I suspect crowriver has used timeanddate.com which doesn't give away such accuracy.
Crowriver, you have called my bluff although not for the reasons given. I suspect I have been fed misinformation by a Frenchman as my original statement appears true in Paris.
In the centre of town we will have to suffer another 5 seconds being shaved of the end of the day tomorrow and then wait until Saturday before they begin to get earlier. However for those working nearer the airport this 5 seconds will be experienced* split over Thursday and Friday.

Really enjoy seeing a little bit of light on the horizon when I am arriving to work this week. Exciting times ahead.

Kids have been being difficult in the morning so I've been leaving later and later, it was very nearly light when I left this morning, and I had a monster tail wind. Life is good.

@steveo
I also noted an increased luminosity this morning. The four weeks either side of the winter solstice are always a trial.
Four days until I celebrate exit from An Dùbhlachd for another year.

Some of the birds having been singing in the mornings this week as if they think it is spring already.
Posted 4 years ago # -
there does seem to be an acceleration in the increase in daylight starting today (though no clouds) also quite shiny moon
Posted 4 years ago # -
The moon's an arrant thief and her pale fire she snatches from the sun.
